ForensicPath

While we are all sweating out this application process I thought it might be a good idea to ask why you choose the medical field path? Also, is there a specific specialty that you are leaning towards and why?

As for me:
I have always sort of had the idea of being a doctor in the back of my mind. However, as I got closer to college I was looking for something different. I didn't like the idea of being in school for the rest of my life. I have always liked ethics and law, so I thought maybe that I could go into a law field. Then I realized that is a lot of schooling too (not as much as medicine) and reading law books is just plain boring. I also went through a phase where I thought veterinary medicine was for me (mainly because I love my dog). After I brought my dog to the vet, I decided against taking that path. So law, bioethics, and veterinarian were not for me. Naturally I went back to my first inclination, which was medicine. Cognition and learning has also always fascinated me. I worked for a number of years in the department of neurology at SUNY SB where researchers where looking at multiple sclerosis and neurodegenerative disorders. However, I don't think that I am cut out for research, so I went back to the clinical idea. I then worked in an ED, which I loved. I loved the high intensity environment and having to be able to think and act quickly. I was doing some online research of various fields of medicine and I came across forensic psychiatry. While I was reading about forensic psych I saw a link to a website about forensic pathology. That was it, I needed to learn more about forensic path. I read some books and decided that I had to work in a ME office to really come to a conclusion about forensic pathology. After working in an ME office for the summer I have decided that it is a perfect way for me to combine my interest in medicine and still be involved with law (especially criminal law). So thats where I'm at now. It could all change tomorrow for all I know. I may get to medical school and decide that urology is what I want to do for the rest of my life. Who knows? They key, I think, is to always keep an open mind as life throws its various curveballs so that I will ultimately end up happy.

I have also decided that I would easily sacrifice having a lot of money in order to have a job that I love doing (government pay for an ME is not that good). I would rather be comfortable and happy than rich and unhappy.

I originally intended to become a quack, but that just didn't work out.

Why medicine?
That's a great question. And I think the reluctance to answer it stems from not really knowing, to not wanting to give away a great interview/essay answer.

There are several reasons why I want to become a physician, most of which revolve around personally experience... for example being in a third world country and seeing the lack of medical care and wanting to become a doctor so that I can go back, and lend a helping hand... I know I can't change the world, but I can change someone's world!!

My main interests are in rural general practice. I want to serve in the underserved areas.
