For those of you only applying to allopathic schools or those who would prefer an acceptance to an allo vs. osteo school, why? Do you not believe in the osteopathic philosophy?, Feel DO's command less respect? Don't belive a DO is a real doctor? Just wanted to get some opinions on how you view DO's and how you feel the public and other MD's view DO's.

IMHO, it's not about believing in the osteopathic philosophy, I just think people haven't been exposed to it as much. But for people who have some knowledge, this could be a turn on or off point.

Of course DOs are real doctors, no one denies that. To the average American public, I doubt a DO versus MD makes a big difference, esp in primary care.

In terms of academic research I'm sure there are more opportunities in allopathic medicine, which is one of the main reasons why I'm applying allopathic. Also, my state school MD tuition fees would be much less than any osteo. school.

I doubt it is as much stigma as it is opportunity. Also, why do alot of DOs apply to allopathic residencies? I'm just curious, don't mean to incite.

BTW, if you do a search on this topic, you'd come up with a zillion threads that have answers to your questions. It's been oft-debated.

On a closing note, I feel a flame war in 5....4.....3.... 😉

P.S. I just wanted to add - in terms of MDs and DOs working together and the respect level, I doubt any normal person has the guts to call someone out ragging on the fact that they are a DO. How assinine would that be? You have to be a professional to be a doctor. Granted you may have your own biases but you usually keep them to yourself. Otherwise how would you treat patients etc? How could you function in an environment that consists of you taking cues from others, in many cases? I think respect is garnered by work ethic and capability in the field, not DO or MD. That being said, of course some stigma exists, but for most, pulling in over 100-150 grand a year would be a nice tradeoff. Hell there's a DO in my area who works in infertility and pulls in 600K. I doubt he thinks about stigma too much...

There are lots of threads out there that answer your questions so you might want to do a search on "DO" in this forum (you could also look on the pre-do forum). No need to start a new MD vs DO thread when there are so many already out there.

Research would be a big reason to choose allo or osteo. Also, osteopathic medicine isn't really well known mainstream so some people don't want to have to constantly explain the degree. Others believe that most people look down on DO's and they aren't comfortable with that stigma. There are those who feel that it's harder to get into a specialty as a DO, or that certain residencies will discriminate against you if you are not MD.

It also comes down to the fact that there are a lot of pre-meds out there who have never heard of osteopathic medicine, so they don't know anything about it. It's not easy to apply to a DO school when the first time you hear about osteopathic medicine is a week before you send out applications. I think the majority of people who apply DO have had some experience with an osteopathic physician.

As far as why people do apply to or matriculate at DO schools, I believe it has little to do with the whole philosophy idea. Although there are plenty of people who choose the DO route because of OMT, I get the sense that a lot of individuals decide on a particular DO school because of location, convenience, in-state tuition costs vs out of state MD schools, or they just want to be a doctor, regardless of degree, and they received no MD acceptances. Of course, that is simplifying it a bit.

No fight coming 😉 at least not from me.

There are not enough osteopathic residency positions for each year's graduating classes, so logically at least some DOs will have to go to allopathic residencies. There are other reasons, of course, but this is a simple one.

Actually most (over 65%) DOs do allopathic residencies! That is one reason the whole debate has become moot. There are DOs everywhere including Hopkins and Harvard.

my reason, as pathetic as it sounds. i know no one that knows what a DO degree is outside of pre-med students, but everyone knows what an MD is.

69 <--- can end sentences w/ a preposition b/c going to be a doctor, not an english professor.
