I haven't been posting long, but I've noticed not only in this forum, but also in the MD/DO forums, people asking if you would go into your chosen/future profession if you didn't make the money you do or can. I seriously wonder what goes through the mind of people who say if they made only 50k a year they would still be a dentist or doctor. Let's get real here. How in the world would you pay back your loans?!?! Here's my top three reasons why I've chosen dentistry. Feel free to post your three reasons also!!
#1- Money, plain and simple. I have a wife, a child, and one on the way. I'm pretty sure there will be a couple more to come. I want to be able to support them financially. If I can make it so my wife doesn't have to work, I will. I can also do the humanitarian things I want to do, like going to 3rd world countries and provide a service that they most likely lack. Dentistry gives me that option.
#2- Time. I can work 3-4 days a week and make more than enough to support me and my family. If I want to take off for a 3 day weekend with my family I can. I don't have to worry about calling in sick or getting the day off and losing money. I'm not gonna work on fridays anyways!
#3- Prestige. I like the fact that I can be called doctor. Dentistry is a respected profession just about anywhere you go. I think it shows that you are someone who is hard working and dedicated.
Other reasons like being my own boss, owning a business, etc. also follow, but these are the top 3 reasons why I chose dentistry.
