Wife has sudden vision disturbance

A couple of days ago my wife noticed that it was difficult to see out of her right eye. She thought it was just her contact, so she cleaned them out and it didn't help so she just switched contacts. Today, I took a look with a fundoscope and noticed a dark ridge around once side of her optic disc. Does anybody know what this could be due to? She has an appointment set up this week to see an ophthalmologist.

What you saw may be a "pigment crescent" but this wouldn't cause a visual problem. It would be wise to keep the appointment.
