will be easier if a student graduaded from Pharmacology school then apply to Pha

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was thinking apply to Pharmacology school then apply tp Pharmacy school, do you guys think that will that be easier?

what in the world is pharmacology school? do you mean get a degree in pharmacology?

Pharmacology school and Pharmacy school are one in the same good sir.

Then why is he/she applying to pharmacology school then pharmacy school? Yes, going to pharmacy school twice is the ticket. Maybe they meant cosmetology school. haha

i dont want to be mean but... how are u going to get into "pharmacology" school with your bad spelling and grammar?

I'm assuming by pharmacology school you are talking about getting a masters or PhD. Then no, it is not helpful to do that first.

See the "lor hurry up" thread. I had to refrain from commenting there.

pharmacology school...? wtf

i think i'll keep my snarky comment to myself and let this thread speak for itself

I think this guy meant getting a BS in Pharmacology at his undergrad school, then applying to Pharmacy School.

The things you learn as a pharmacology major can be useful in being hired by pharmaceutical companies, if you don't make it into pharmacy school and get your PharmD. Pharmacology itself is a subject, a "study of" something, whereas pharmacy is a practice. You need to know a bit of pharmacology as a pharmacist, but its a completely different career.

It's most common for people applying to pharm school to have a BS in Chemistry or Biochemistry. Pharmacology is more rare, so it could help you stand out.

you always got some "haha" thing to say huh?

PhD in pharmacology is entirely different than a pharmd. It is research based, and you learn courses to be able to conduct invididual research and write original work worthy to be published in a journal. The courses are not for a licensing test or a practice, but more for the development of the field of pharmacology itself. The skill set is entirely different than those needed for a PharmD. And I think that the PhD process is a lot more difficult than professional school. Often in planning research you do not know the route that you need to go. The classes are there just to give you background, and adequate enough background. But after that, there is a lot more work on your own, and of course, with direction from your advisor. Being a good PhD student does not mean that you will be a good professional school student, and vice versa. The skill sets are entirely different.

Pursue pharmacology if you are truly interested in the chemical/biochemical composition of drugs, and are interested in drug discovery, etc. Otherwise please DO NOT go down this route.

If it is just a bachelors you are pursuing, then I think that this would be a good choice. You will get more exposure to drugs than a more common chemistry/biochemistry major. If you think about pursuing pharmacology or pharmaceutical sciences as an undergraduate degree (for example, SUNY-Buffalo DOES indeed have this major) then go right ahead. It will help you prepare for pharmacy school. If you really want to have a good undergraduate "backup" degree, I would highly recommend chemical engineering. The pay with undergrad is $60K and you will learn most of the chemistry that a regular chemistry major would obtain.
If anyone wants to have a good degree just in case they do not get accepted to pharmacy school, I recommend a Bachelors of Science in chemical engineering.

But DON'T think that you will apply to PhD in pharmacology because it is easier to get in. The two (PhD pharmacology and PharmD) are not very interrelated at all.

Are you going to be a professor after you get this PhD in pharmacology? If you only want to be a pharmacist, it will be a waste of time to get the PhD and I would recommend you only getting the PharmD.

Actually a lot of my therapeutics professors are PharmDs do research at the same time. Many of them wrote the therapeutics texts and actually preach to doctors and other pharmacists about their specialty topics.

First I am an international student, I you meant that I am stupit or something Second, I just came from my country and did not any English before. Ofcourse You should know better English than I do, but the point is ;instead of concern about my question, you prefered to make fun of my English. I will see you in my country, and let's see how you are going to do with another language in six months and at the same time taking all science classes in different language. 🙄🙄🙄

I did put the word "only" wrong. You are correct and even my pharmacy school's dean and all the staff have PharmDs.

of course youre going to be criticized in this forum! people are mean here, havent u learned? 😛 I mean, how are u going to communicate with a doctor when they call in an order? How will u speak to an insurance company? And by the way, what the heck are you trying to say in the first sentence?!

Dude, who cares....I am an American too and can understand what he is trying to say... so maybe you should help him with his grammar instead of criticizing him...

This thread should be over by now.

Actually, Pharmacology is usually apart of Medical school... don't know why to be honest, but there are numerous Med Departments that have a pharmacology department. But yeah, are you talking about a graduate degree?
