hey folks, long time reader, first time poster... anyhoo, just finished my interviews yesterday, yippee!! now the hard part comes- any words of wisdom for figuring out who really liked you and who is really blowing smoke? i thought about it and realized that although i may have had a good interview, there are 149 others competing for the same spot!!! i thought this process was sort of like dating, but this is so much worse. okay good luck to all! hope we cross paths in person some day. cheers!

You missed the point. You shouldn't CARE who likes you. Rank them according to who YOU like and it'll work out in the end. They'll only rank you high if they like you. Its too much stress to worry about your rank list. Don't waste your energy worrrying about theirs.

What desperado said. What they think should make no difference to your rank list unless you think they hated your guts and would make your life a living hell if you went there, but you still think they ranked you. You see how little sense that makes?

i know, i know. please excuse the minor freak out. blah blah blah- rank the places in the order you want to go to them- yes, it's been drilled into my head a million times. but is it just me or have you met program directors who have said that they want ot hear from you before hte date that they are going to make their rank list?? s ome of the program directors are very hands off, we won't contact you, etc, but then some are not. okay i have finished my rank list so it don't matter no more anyway. thanks for the insight folks 🙂 good luck to you all!!!

No fear shagwel-
It can be stressful, but here's how i dealt with what you ask. I emailed my #1 and flat out told them they were my #1. Shoot, I even asked to sign outside the Match but got the smackdown for that comment. #2 and #3 I emailed and told them that "at the time I'm not exactly sure where you'll be but you're in my top 3." I obviously added a bit of fluff, but whatever. I didn't outright lie to any program, and I wouldn't recommend it. EM is a small world and I remember the applicants last year who said they ranked us #1 and obviously went somewhere else.

Q

do you really think it's necessary or helpful to tell your #1 program that they are #1? do most people do it?

It's probably not going to hurt. I didn't do this. And I matched at my #1.

What's the consensus on the deadline to contact your number 1 program? I have heard around the first week of next month. At some point it would be less useful if programs have already made their lists.

Necessary? No. Helpful? Doubtful, but it can't hurt. Most people I suspect don't do this. I didn't, nor did anybody I talked to about it.
