Is anyone currently doing a 3rd/4th year rotation (or Internship/Residency) at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City NY? I have until some time this week to decide whether to go there or Oakwood South Shore Hospital in Michigan for my 3rd year clinical rotations. I am leaning towards NY, but I would really love to hear from students who are currently there. If anyone is there or knows someone who is, please reply and let me know. Thanks!
(Sorry for the re-post, I also posted this in the Osteopathic forum.)
Pros: Decent Size hospital (>500 beds between Wilson and Binghamton General), big surgery department including a lot of neurosurgery and CT surgery, state of the art radiology services including MRI and PET/CT (just got PACS for the whole hospital), very strong OB (including high risk pregnancies, perinatal medicine, NICU), very cheap area to live (they have cheap housing available), they are a regional referral center so you get a good case mix including the occasional zebra, they do a lot of OMT (I assume you are interested in this because you are a DO, I have no idea what it entails, but everyone says it is good here), decent number of other medical students (DOs from like 4 different schools and MD students from Upstate, MD students from Ross), psychiatry is excellent, inpatient addiction treatment (which is interesting and a good rotation), a few interesting clinical trials going on (A few on stroke, a few cardiac, a few onc), about 1/2 the grand rounds are good (the other half are a waste of an hour), excellent cards and GI, very friendly staff (no scut work for students or residents), excellent ICU rotations
Cons: Very weak pediatrics (low census), community hospital so a lot of community attendings (you know change your orders without telling you why kind of people), at times rotations are quite slow at others they are killing you (but seems more slow than fast to me - average intern census on GMS is like 8 per intern so that seems slow, because it is a lot of CAP and CHF, not complicated stuff), residents tend to be hit or miss, still hand writing notes and orders, limited research oppurtunities (I consider this a pro, but most think it is a con so majority rules)
Location: Medium sized city in Southern NY, depends on what you like if you are a big city person it is not for you, nice golf courses near by, good skiing near by, near the finger lakes, good university (SUNY Binghamton Near by), pretty low crime rate, not a very diversified population, you definately need a car to get around, not a very cultural area (no major museums or things like that)
Okay that is all I can think of right now. Hope it helped.
