Is anyone currently doing a 3rd/4th year rotation (or Internship/Residency) at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City NY? I have until some time this week to decide whether to go there or Oakwood South Shore Hospital in Michigan for my 3rd year clinical rotations. I am leaning towards NY, but I would really love to hear from students who are currently there. If anyone is there or knows someone who is, please reply and let me know. Thanks!

(Sorry for the re-post, I also posted this in the Osteopathic forum.)

Pros: Decent Size hospital (>500 beds between Wilson and Binghamton General), big surgery department including a lot of neurosurgery and CT surgery, state of the art radiology services including MRI and PET/CT (just got PACS for the whole hospital), very strong OB (including high risk pregnancies, perinatal medicine, NICU), very cheap area to live (they have cheap housing available), they are a regional referral center so you get a good case mix including the occasional zebra, they do a lot of OMT (I assume you are interested in this because you are a DO, I have no idea what it entails, but everyone says it is good here), decent number of other medical students (DOs from like 4 different schools and MD students from Upstate, MD students from Ross), psychiatry is excellent, inpatient addiction treatment (which is interesting and a good rotation), a few interesting clinical trials going on (A few on stroke, a few cardiac, a few onc), about 1/2 the grand rounds are good (the other half are a waste of an hour), excellent cards and GI, very friendly staff (no scut work for students or residents), excellent ICU rotations

Cons: Very weak pediatrics (low census), community hospital so a lot of community attendings (you know change your orders without telling you why kind of people), at times rotations are quite slow at others they are killing you (but seems more slow than fast to me - average intern census on GMS is like 8 per intern so that seems slow, because it is a lot of CAP and CHF, not complicated stuff), residents tend to be hit or miss, still hand writing notes and orders, limited research oppurtunities (I consider this a pro, but most think it is a con so majority rules)

Location: Medium sized city in Southern NY, depends on what you like if you are a big city person it is not for you, nice golf courses near by, good skiing near by, near the finger lakes, good university (SUNY Binghamton Near by), pretty low crime rate, not a very diversified population, you definately need a car to get around, not a very cultural area (no major museums or things like that)

Okay that is all I can think of right now. Hope it helped.

Not to reopen an old post but as it's four years old now and I'm wondering if other people at Wilson Memorial currently have the same experience. I'm looking to go there for rotations next year and would love to hear from people who are currently there what they think about the program and experience.

Thanks in advance.

Any feedback from folks currently or recently on rotations at Wilson?? Thx

I'm currently a 3rd yr student at LECOM Erie doing most of my cores at Wilson, and I have to be honest, I LOVE it here. The structure is excellent, pathology is surprisingly good (for a smaller hospital), excellent doctors who (on the whole) are willing to teach. I can only speak for a few rotations specifically, but here is a quick +/- list:

(+)
Excellent didactic set up (plenty of great lectures), all concentrated on Thursdays which is convenient

Psych is pretty great - one of the largest in-patient facilities in NYS, meaning a HUGE amount of wild pathology

Anesthesia - if you can get this as an elective here, it's stellar. I love it.
Amazing docs, great teachers, and a double dose of surgery exposure. I liked this so much, it swayed my interests and I am not looking into residencies

IM (according to a buddy on service here) is great, 2 mo normal IM with the 3rd mo as a pseudo elective in cardio/nephro/ICU/Endocrine which is AWESOME for the exposure and is just considered part of the normal IM block.

FM is great here from what I am told, and its an excellent residency program.

Students i've interacted with on the Surgery rotation seem to love it
Binghamton is <4hrs from NYC, DC... excellent for some road trips

While things are seemingly organized, sometimes you need to email multiple times to get things accomplished. This is getting better though, because our coordinator JUST moved into the position and she's getting much better at it.

You need to commute for psych between three locations which are around 5 miles apart, which is a pain in the ass on thurs for didactics

The water is horrible. No idea why, just horrible haha

Hope this helps. It's a great hospital.

Okay okay, jeez. That's quite a love fest you're having.
But seriously, thanks for the feedback. It was a bit a of a black hole before.
You paint a pretty picture of the place.
How do you think 4th year will work out?
