Just wanted to get some opinions on this... If, hypothetically, an applicant was certain that s/he was only going to a school if there was some sort of scholarship offered, should that applicant withdraw as soon as decisions about scholarships are sent? OR, is it possible that when others withdraw, the scholarships they would have gotten will be subsequently offered to another candidate?

Does anyone know of a case where someone got a "We regret to inform you" letter about scholarships and then closer to May 15th (or afterwards) received a letter saying "Weeee, here's a scholarship"?

Personally, I certainly want to withdraw ASAP so others can get acceptances, I just don't want to close any doors. Thoughts?

I wouldn't count on miracle reversals of financial aid decisions...unless you have some unknown information to provide the school with to tell them why they're wrong they aren't likely to change their minds.

i've never heard of that happening...you can try calling financial aid offices/admissions to get the likelihood of that occurring, but i think they probably stick with the first decision

A medical student at one of the schools where I interviewed told me he recieved a scholarship offer on may 14. So I plan on holding out to the bitter end at my first choice schools.

Curious. Had s/he already been given a "no scholarship for your" notice before that point? Or had s/he simply not been notified either way about scholarships? I will certainly hold on to any acceptances where I haven't recieved a "no," but I'm wondering about where I have.... Thanks to all!

He didn't say whether he had been notified that he hadn't recieved one. He said that he was all set to go to a different school, and the school called him and asked him what would it take for him to come to their school. In fact, he didn't even say whether he applied for a scholarship, although I assumed that he did because the school has a scholarship interview process. (OH yeah, the school was WashU, I don't know why I was keeping it like it was a secret  )

I reason it like this- the best candidates at the best schools will recive scholarships at multiple schools. When they are finally forced to make a decision as to which school they will attend, those scholarships should be up for grabs unless they just save them for next years applicants. Each school may have different policies.
