Hello,

Is there a proper way to withdraw from schools at which you have been offered and have scheduled an interview? Is an email to the admissions office sufficient? Should a reason for withdrawal be given?

Thanks!

I don't think a reason has to be given. A polite email should be fine.

I e-mailed or called the schools where I was granted interviews to cancel them. There really is no reason why you need to tell them "why" but I did...I explained to them that my first choice had accepted me and the financial offer was too sweet to pass by. Nobody was bothered or irritated just thankful that I told them ahead of time and just not show up. Good luck.

Thanks for your help! I just withdrew from several schools by email. 👍

I withdrew from Harvad and Pritzker by mail. Sent them letters saying that for "personal reasons" I would not be completing thier secondaries. Obviously they had not given me interviews. My decision to withdraw was because when I sumbitted my AMCAS, I was unrealistically optimistic. Gradually reality kicked in and I realized that I would be thrwoing money away, so I withdrew. Money saved = 37 cents for postage vs. 80 Dollars.

i love people that withdraw. respek

I also strongly support withdrawers. Once you have an acceptance, you should drop a school unless you really think you might attend there over the school at which you were accepted. This opens up spots for other people who may not have received any interviews yet or who may have your back-up as a top choice.

I know several people who have said they will just not show up for an interview rather than withdrawing, but in this case, the school can't give your interview spot to someone else, so you're hurting other applicants...Withdrawing is really easy, and there's no reason not to do it...My two cents... 😛

Do you need to officially withdraw pre-secondary?

No, no need to withdraw pre-secondary. One school did get kind of irritated when I didn't fill out the secondary, though. I got a letter in the mail from the school saying something like "although we felt like you were a worthy investment and showed interest in you, it's obvious that you do not have the same interest in us." I'm not exaggerating. It was quite odd.

Worthy investment? The 37 cent stamp or the FREE email

Do tell, what school was that eh?

The correct response is to tell them you are having financial difficulties and cannot attend unless they pay your travel expenses. One of two things then happens.
1. Free trip
2. Interview cancels itself.

I just withdrew from both UC Irvine and UC Davis. Whee, 2 more Mondays freed up for screwing off and senioritising!

Thanks! Maybe now they'll call me! (doubt it) 😉

that would be not only incredibly rude and inconsiderate, but also a huge waste of everybody's time. 👎 👎
