Withdrawing from schools

How do you withdraw from school you already have interview invites from but don't want to attend anymore due to an acceptance to a higher choice school?

What is the proper way? Email?

I always email something like:

Regretfully, I would like to withdraw my application.

I e-mailed. Sometimes they would respond and ask me to fax a formal withdraw letter or something like that.

E-mail is fine. For those schools where I had already scheduled an interview and the date was close, I called to make sure they got the notice and would have time to reschedule somebody else.
