Saw this was published in NEJM today. Seemed relevant to this subforum...


I was hoping for a little more digging into the root cause if things really haven't improved in the 35 years the study examined, but I suppose the study wasn't designed to examine that. There were some interesting studies in the discussion as well.

I imagine it will have to change at some point though since representation of women in medicine is changing. Specific to pediatrics, the specialty is generally more than >50 to 60% women.

Anyway, just for those interested.

I'm not terribly surprised. In my own division, most of the official leadership positions are held by men, despite the division being >50% women. But, we've had the same number of men and women promoted in the past couple years (two women to associate professor, one man to associate professor and one to professor). One of my mentors is still an assistant professor but has no desire to jump through the promotion hoops.
