I was just wondering how difficult is it to match in California for different residencies (i.e. Family Med, Surgery, Internal Med, Radiology, Anesthesiology, and etc.)

And is there a difference in attending an out of state medical school vs in state.

Are there any websites or books I can look at?

Thanks

Well, you can look at FREIDA but since its not a very reliable source (self-report data), I"m not sure how helpful it would be.

The truth is that there is no real answer to your question. Some California residencies are more competitive than elsewhere and some are not. Some specialties, like everywhere else, will be more competitive in California because of the environment, and others will not be.

In general, programs in popular places like to know that you are applying for more than the environment. That said, there are some places in California which are less popular and are less competitive than the rest of the state - Fresno and Bakersfield come to mind (from personal experience) and they may well be less competitive than other programs in other states. Like anywhere else, if you have some connections - like family in the area - its a bonus, but residencies aren't like medical school, your state of residence or whether or not you went to medical school there doesn't make a signficant difference.

Programs are more or less competitive because of location but that's not the only reason...except maybe in San Diego where you don't need any other reason.
