Hey, I've heard some people use this reason for a program or two, but if you're ranking, let's say 15 programs for example, what's wrong with having #13,14,15 as back ups if you think the programs are "okay." Isn't that better than post matching..Plus you'd only get one of those "backups" if you absolutely didn't get any of the programs you ranked ahead of it, right?!!!?

Cause a program would never match with a less favorable applicant over you at any of you're top 12 programs, right?!?

I was told to rank a program unless I'd rather not match than go there.

You're still ranking a program with the intention that you COULD go there. It's a choice. If you think you'd hate being there, you shouldn't rank it, because if you do, then there IS a chance, however low, of ending up there. You're right that you'll get first consideration of the schools you ranked higher, but if you're in a situation where for some reason you ranked those and didn't match, and if you did end up at one of those last 3, you have to weigh scrambling versus ending up there. It's taking a chance both ways (which programs would be around durign the scramble versus the possibility of not matching at your top 12 and ending up at a program you don't like).

That's why people say to not rank a program if you wouldn't want to go there.
