I'm so excited. I have an old doctor/friend who I was finally able to get ahold of and now I get to shadow!! I'm soooo excited!! Unfortantly I have to go through the extremely boring HIPAA training again, but that's a small price to pay.

Well worth it in the end! I shadow surgeries almost weekly now, its amazing. Some of the attending's are even stopping to show me certain things and explain what they are doing and why. (The residents are probably, Who The F*** is this kid, lol). Maybe I am more energetic and excited about things than other people, but being in the environment makes me feel at home. Now I just need to finish my path so I can be the one standing at the table.

Nice! Yeah HIPAA training is boring but it could be worse. I'm trying to do some more shadowing with a doc at a different hospital than I have done in the past, and their Student Services department is making me jump through all these hoops: HIPAA training, paperwork, drug testing, TB test, and titers for like 4 different things. Just to stand there, not even work or volunteer or anything. lol

that doesnt sound worth it to me.

Only reason I'm doing it is because the doc is amazing, he has a spectacular bedside manner, is a general surgeon (a specialty I'm interested in), and is wonderful with students, in a room with med students and residents he even takes the time to ask me questions. (I shadowed him at a separate hospital a couple years ago, but I want to be able to spend one day a week with him this summer and he's at a different hospital in the mornings.)

oh thats cool that you already have a rapport with the doc. it seemed like a lot of wasted energy if you were just trying to shadow someone randomly. good deal.

All my "HIPAA training" was just some stupid form to read/sign.

Haha your lucky. Mine was a exam with the answers on the back :)

You think it's annoying now wait until you have to go through the ppd and everything again next year when you renew your badge

My HIPAA training involves watching two videos and taking a short test and then signing paperwork. Not horrible but not fun either, especially when I have my Anatomy final and Nutrition final to study for. But I think it will be well worth it, I have a good rapport with the one DO I'm getting ready to shadow and then another DO is going let me shadow for a few months. I'm just getting my foot in the door, but I'm excited.

Speaking of "shadowing", I really dug my experience working as an ER scribe. Although officially it isn't shadowing, it effectively is paid shadowing since you are working alongside a physician 8.5 hours a day. At my particular place, I was able to write HPIs as they were evaluating patients, order labs for them, and be there when they consulted with other specialists. I know different programs vary, but ours was pretty good and most of the physicians really enjoyed mentoring us, discussing their thought processes with us, and generally teaching us clinical things. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

congrats. one of the best things to do is keep a log of patients and their cases. it helps anytime. also write down their management

Mine too...

What does HIPPA training involve anyways?
