Do any dental students work PT while in school? I am asking becasue of my situation. I will be moving to attend dental school and will need as much money as I can get my hands on.

What I am trying to get at is: is it possible to have a job and keep up with school work or is this wishful thinking on my part?

Thoughts?

I only knew one guy that did it and he got dismissed after first year...

Yeah, whatever you get probably isn't worth the time you spend on it. Unless you are a stripper or perhaps moonlight as a hygenist (is this legal?), you won't make very much on an hourly basis. Maybe teaching DAT classes would be ok as well, because the hourly is very good and it does help you study a little bit.

I probably wouldn't bother working for $7 an hour at J Crew if it is all you can get. Dental school is an important investment that must be seen through.

I can understand not being able to work while in school, but what types of jobs are there for 1st and 2nd year students during the summer?

I worked my sophmore year at a residence hall sitting at the front desk, and as a basic science tutor for freshman. Both jobs allowed me to study on the job and it gave me a little extra spending money.

I (now 2nd year) and my wife (1st year) both work about 32-34 2 week pay period. We work at a group home. Pretty easy job take them to activities (movies, shopping, events) and cook for them. We work every other weekend. My wife starts at 4:00pm on friday and stays until 8:00pm on Sat. I come in at 8:00pm on Sat. and work until 6:30am on Mon. We are able to sleep and study while we are there. If you are like me and feel you don't need to study every waking hour than an easy job like this would be no problem. I would not recommend a job like working at a bar or restraunt that would be a little taxing.

I've been working through the past three years of dental school. I teach test prep classes for Kaplan and tutor for the medical and dental schools. I also teach a night class at the local community college. Generally I've worked about 25 hours a week so far. While working during dental school is certainly not for everyone, I tend to stay on top of things when I have more to do. I've done well so far in school and I'm applying to ortho now. Teaching is probably the ideal job for a dental student if you're qualified to do so...the pay is good, the experience is great, and it keeps you sharp.

That or bartending! Bartending or cocktail waitressesing makes more than a regular hourly wage ..if you're good.
Is it possible to bartend once or twice a week (fri and sat nights)
and still maintain good grades?
