Trying to better understand post residency work options and whats actually feasible and what isn't.

Is it realistic to work , 8-10 shifts a month somewhere rural/high paying? Essentially work locums and take the highest paying assignments you can find regardless of where they're located?

Are there consistently assignments to be found that pay especially more than a coastal highly desirable location to make the travel worth it?

You bet. Recently Kentucky has been pretty hot, with sites offering about $335/h. Even in more "desirable" states, you can find great rates. A couple sites in central california 6 months ago offered $280-295/h (haven't looked into this recently). If you're single or unattached and don't mind living out of a suitcase and work your butt off, its possible to constantly find and jump on these options and make as much as an orthopedist ;)

Not single, but have an understanding partner :)

Ideally, leaving for 3-4 days at a time a couple times a month to knock out those 6-8 shifts would be perfect. 3 weeks at home, a week on the road interspersed over the course of the month would be perfect. Is it as easy as telling the recruiter, I want to work X shifts at X location?

Thanks for your feedback!

Thats exactly how it works. Keep in mind that if you offer to work nights/weekends there's a higher chance of getting accepted at a higher hourly rate; there should also be a holiday differential, if not then simply say you don't want to work holidays. Also, if you offer additional shifts, you should be able to negotiate a higher rate also.

How much could one get for nights
