OKAY, maybe I am extremely stupid, how does an attack in a private or public take away from the fact that it was an attack to a person WHO HAS NO CONNECTION OR RELEVANCE TO THIS INCIDENT?

Enough of this! Can someone please give me the phone number of the Red Cross? I am type "O" blood, universal donor, and I heard we are In desperate need....

I recommend we all stop typing posts, and making accusations and instead everyone, INCLUDING ME...get my butt to the nearest Red Cross, and actually do something instead making myself look like a fool.....

Guys

here is the URL for the Red Cross
http://www.redcross.org/

I found the phone number

1-800-GIVE-LIFE

I think as future physicians, lets please put our ideologies aside, and donate blood and help those in dire need :(

When I heard the news this morning I was dumbfounded. It was just surreal. Imagine the number of people that have died in this tragedy!! It makes me sick when I think about the person(s) responsible for all this!!

It was bright and clear in Manhattan this morning. Those were the nuances that I noticed about the day when I trotted into Riverside Park at 7:30 am; these facts, plus the pools of water that had collected on the roads during the heavy rains yesterday evening. As I ran, I saw the same faces that grace my path every morning: the couples running side-by-side; the woman in pink practically floating as she practices Tai Chi; the gray-haired woman with the collie dog and beagle. Each person has a different story, a different history, a different array of loves and passions of which I have no knowledge...but which I would like to learn about someday. For the moment, my greatest concern is whether or not I have the stamina to run half of the way back from 96th street. And oh, I have to finish a lab report.

Flash forward one hour. Alarming news circulates, and the unsettled drone of AM radio fills the hallways. First the news of a plane crash elicits concern and sympathy. Twenty minutes later, another crash. . . fear flashes in the eyes. In Manhattan this morning, the sun embraced the City, dogs scampered in the park, citizens practiced Tai Chi. Two hours later, a landmark, a symbol characterizing one of the most famous cities in the world, groans, buckles, and crumbles to the ground, dragging thousands of innocent, terrified people, and the heart of a nation, with it.

Even as I stare at my words now, I feel that no words extant in any human language could ever capture the depth of the tragedy of today's events. Residents for whom I'm responsible have come to me choking down tears..."My mother works at the Trade Center"..."My father's office overlooks the Pentagon in DC"...."I don't know where my friend is, I can't get in touch with her".... When my boyfriend IM'd me to tell me that the building in which he works was being evacuated, that he would walk through the streets for 60 blocks to meet me, and that his cell phone was not working...and that he loved me....the fear that gripped my chest was like none other that I have ever experienced. Yet I know all too well that this panic was watered-down and mild compared to the terror that so many others in this City have endured during these past twelve hours.

How can the world spin on its head and turn upside down in the space of two hours??? Two buildings that everyone identified with NY are GONE. They were there at 8:30 this morning. They had disappeared by 10:30. With them, thousands of lives -- thousands upon thousands of passions, loves, and stories in which we may have delighted, from which we may have learned -- have vanished, leaving a trail of memories and tears in their wake. And a cloud of dust, of voices that once were, enshrouds Lower Manhattan, looming from the south to remind us of the sheer tragedy that has befallen so many...and of the terrible workings of hatred. It tears apart lives, penetrates the hearts of a City, and reverberates across an entire country.

My love and support go out to all of those whom this terrible tragedy has affected. To those whom hatred has stolen from us, may my heart always echo hollow from the lack of you. To those injured, in body or in spirit, you will forever be in my prayers; may strength and hope heal you. And to those of you with whom I am blessed, I promise to always hold you dear, and to never forget what a gift you are to my life.

Please embrace those whom you love and savor the preciousness of each day. Please pray for those who suffer...if not to a God or presence, than to your own spirit.

I started my morning rejoicing because I finally mailed off a couple of secondaries. By the time I returned home everything had changed. All of our #itching about AMCAS and the delays seem very trivial. I decided to log on here to get a break from the devastation and mayhem on the TV. Unfortunately, I ran smack in the middle of more FIGHTING, ANIMOSITY, AND SENSELESS DEBATES. Can' we all just get along!

On another note. I understand that they are looking for nurses and doctors to volunteer. I'm a registered nurse. If anyone knows of the number to call to volunteer, please post here.

EO1 -- I was worried about you. Glad to see your post and know that you are OK.

I work for the Air National Guard. We have B-1B's and a lot of hot liquid metal in little bomb shaped packages. I say we turn the middle east desert sand into glass.

At about 8am this morning, a friend of mine called me and told me to turn on CNN because a plane had flown into one of the WTC buildings. At this point, I really thought that it was an accident. To my horror, as I was watching the live coverage, a plane flew across the screen and the second building was struck. Needless to say, it was awful to watch the events that unfolded in this country today. I truly do feel for those who lost family or friends in this (especially those who were in the planes - that must have been just horrific).

Today was my first day shadowing in the UIC Hospital ER. You could not imagine how hectic it was there, even in a city that was not targeted. The hospitals within the entire state of Illinois went into disaster mode because it was feared that Chicago would be targeted at some point in the day. I cannot even begin to imagine what it must have been like in the ER of a NY or DC hospital.

The eeriest part of the day was driving around - it seemed almost unnatural to have not a single plane in the sky. At one point, I heard a plane above and got a little panicked because I knew that all planes had been grounded (I thought that a terrorist plane might be headed for a Chicago building). Fortunately, it was only military planes.

Military planes. Flying over every major city in the country. Destroyer ships were sent to guard the west coast. The leaders of the country were hidden in secret locations. It is chilling to think about it. We were really under attack today...

It does not have anything to do with hatred; it could be your hide next! What would have happened if those who gave their lives for you so you could enjoy your precious medical school and all of your other opportunities had exhibited weakness rather than strength? Think long and hard about what you are saying, our national security protects our way of life. Believe it or not, there are people in this world who hate us!

Remember, next time, it could be you or a member of your family. You are an American, sack up and be strong, others did it for you, now it is your turn for those that will follow!

I did not even consider race as a reason for my remarks. I dont care what race the person(s) responsible for this is/are, it is not part of this equation.

I'm utterly surprised to see such negative comments ushered back and on forth on this post. Just one thing people: the profession that we are planning to embark on requires a certain level of maturity, composure, compassion, rationality and objectivity. The comments disclosed by some individuals on this posts suggests otherwise. I hope that when in a crisis that people not attack one another but band together to truly help those in need. Life is too short to be consumed by hatred and anger. Goodnight and best wishes to all.

Resident Alien,

Please go back and edit your post removing the F**k (much as I just did, as an example).

I realize that tensions are running high right now, but we must retain some decorum among ourselves.

Also, I thought that your remark about "all who make such immature..." was kind of ironic. :)

Just another note: If your email address was available to the site administrators, I could have sent you a private message instead of posting this.

I agree that once we find who ever did this that we should strike quickly and without mercy. However, there is no hatred or malice in what Im saying. Whoever did this is the equivalent of a pack of mad dogs. You do not try to reason with a mad dog, you do not try to change it because you cannot. You kill it quickly before it hurts someone you love.

I agree that it is ironic, which is why i expressed my frustration at the end of my message. Here's a more blatant irony for thought : When Isreali tanks bulldoze palestinian homes, it is unlawfully built....but when the palestinians fight for the right to protect that, with stones (!), it is terrorism.
My outburst's irony is nothing compared to this.

I shall edit my post to honor peace on this forum, so please accept my apologies (btw, i thought i had my email in my profile, i'll go ahead and put it there).

trouserz, as long as the Palestinians are partying in the streets after killing innocent people, I will not shut-up. Maybe you should re-think your priorites.

I am deeply saddened by what happened today. So much so that I have not been able to do anything today but watch the days tragic events unfold before me on the television. Such a senseless act of violence in which parents lost children, children lost parents, all in all love was tragically ripped apart. What makes it even worse, is watching the Palestinians jump around in joy and take pleasure in such a miserable event. All I want to know is how does one human jump around in joy and actually take pleasure in watching other human beings cry, bleed, and hurt both emotionally and physically. I was dumbfounded at watching this overweight burka-clad woman show us how overjoyed she was at the turn of event in America, knowing that many people lost their children today. If the situation was reversed, I know of not one self respecting American woman that would act so foolishly and be so blatantly disrespectful. The Islamic faith is the only religion that promotes killing of others in the name of God. Not only does this completely devalue the purpose of believing in a higher being but it also demonstrates how ignorant the Islamic faith really is. I apologize for being so blatant in my remarks but I really cannot stand it anymore. Osama Bin Laden needs to pay for this mistake with his life. I personally will not be satisfied with anything less. My heart and my prayers go out to the victims of today tragic events. Please note that justice will be served somehow and someway and all the palestinians that were rejoicing today will one day feel what we felt today. To the post by Resident Alien, I find you to be very ignorant and very immature. You are extremely wrong about the "stone throwing" situation in Palestinan. Do you believe, even for one second, that the palestinians would ever settle for something as petty as rock throwing to defend themselves. The culture is so warped that they do not know how to talk without sacrificing human life. I really feel for the children born into this faith because their innate good and innocence is ripped apart and brainwashed with hate and ignorance. Again, my thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims of such senseless violence today. God Bless.

(a) While evidence most likely shows this attack was orchestrated by Bin Ladin, we still do not know that for sure. Everyone is so quick to condemn "those damn Palestenians" when we (as the general public) do not know for sure. I find that very interesting and yet, at the same time very on par for the current trend in posts on SDN.

(b) Maybe it is just me, but I recall many Americans being very overjoyed with the victories in Iraq. For what were we cheering? Some paper victory? No, people died, both "innocent" as well as military. We thought they were wrong, so we acted and rejoiced in our putting Iraq in its place. How are the reactions of the Palestenians any different? They see us as doing wrong and are happy that we were put in our place.

Contrary to popular belief, mercy is quite the opposite of weakness.

I had sworn to myslef that I would not get involved in this political/moral debate..but I( had to.. Your comments insulting muslim faith are way out of line. You have no right to judge any culture or religion that you are not familiar with. Islam does not..nor has it ever, condoned killing of innocents. Your perception of the religion and those who practice it are stereotypical and I won't bother to correct you. I simply want you to understand that your comments place you in the same category that you so passionatley condemned. We all lost a lot today. It hurt to see people suffering. I felt unsafe today..I think a lot of people did..but your attitudes towards muslims lead me to believe that you might react in the same way towards some "terrorist" you might run in to! I think you owe all muslim and non-muslim members of this forum an apology.

There is a world of difference between rejoicing for putting a country in their place and rejoicing over the death of thousands of people in the name of politics. I don't think any American citizen was cheering for the US because Iraqis died in the war - we were cheering simply because the US military successfuly achieved it's short-term objective. To be honest, I don't remember anybody cheering, per se...more like enthusiastic optimism. The people of Palestine are literally cheering because there is currently death and disorder in the US. The two situations are entirely different.

I don't beleive that people from some 3rd world country could orchestrate such a sophistocated plan. Low-tech bombs in vans and similar things, yes, but this was the big show.

Don't be so quick to blame.

-First of all, I would like to say how shocked i am of such a horrible horrible incident. I have been praying for the victims and the families of the victims all day. This is truly a sad day in american history, i hope that all the people involved get punished and punished hard.

-Does everybody know who trained Osama Bin Laden? Look back in your history books kiddos. It was the U.S. intellegence during the afghanistan revolution.

Palestineans are not rejoicing because of the deaths of the people. Do you not think that they too are people? They are rejoicing because the untouchable country that has been oppressing them for years has finally been touched. these are people in desparation, they have lost everything. i pity them.

Wow. Not really, dear. It just shows how ignorant YOU are.

Again, I simply do not beleive that these street thugs could do something so sophistocated and pull it off. Also, even if it is someone who happens to be from an Islamic country. Does that mean all Muslim people have the same stance? I can tell you this, you know of at least one who feels the same way you do. Me.

I know many people feel this way. I just don't get it. Somebody rapes your daughter so you go and rape theirs? Somebody kills your pregnant wife so you kill theirs? I'm sorry but an eye for an eye just seems wrong to me. Sure I want whoever did this to be punished, but I think it's very probable that along with them there will be innocent people killed also, so to me it's not just a matter of getting some hard on about blasting the hell out of so-and-so. Nothing can bring back the dead and more killing just doesn't make me feel that much better. I can't say why it just doesn't. Strong, weak, merciful or unmerciful it's just a lose lose situation no matter how you look at it.

this has been a tradegy and we are all going to deal with it in different ways. The ONE THING we should not do is go around blaming Muslims or Arabs...nothing has been confirmed yet, no one has taken responsibilty...all we are doing is trying to assign blame so we can have a reason for why this happened.
If everyone is getting angry because some extreme group decided to attack the U.S., there will be a lot of racial/religious hatred in this country and we do not need that right now. Just remember that every type of person died today. Going around and attacking muslims or arabs wont make it any better...try to deal with it in your own way, just dont take it out on someone else.

It is very interesting, that a women in her demented 50s and a couple of teenage dimwitted Palestinian children, represent "all of the Palestinian people, and all the muslims."

look back to 1988, we accidently shot and destroyed an Iranian Airliner, and all the millitary officials in the footage rejoiced for shooting a "millitary plane"...watch the History channel....later we learned that we "accidently shot the plane".....how funny, did we even apologize for that incident?

Can someone please explain why we supported saddam for 8 years, Othama for 10 years (Afghan wars), Pinochet (massacred millions of Chilean citizens INCLUDING american journalists), Noriega? and now recent evidence showed us meddling in the Greek government....

We support dictators, and bring them to power, then in return we destroy the countries and their people and accuse the people of those countries including Latin America to being idiots and savages.....

can someone please explain to me the logic of supporting dictators, and then cursing the people of Latin America, and the Middle East for their "stupidity and savagery"....shows how much as citizens we fail to understand the history and sociopolotical factions of other countries as well as understanding people of other cultures and ethnicities?...

have people forgotten the stereotypes that we all have developed over the century in our history books"

The signs of "Irish need not apply"...and the representation of ALL Italians as mobsters......Japanese americans who were forced into internment camps? I can assure you, placing and villing ethnic or religios minorities in "internment camps" wouldn't be a solution.....we later payed retributions to Japanese americans for the injustice we did to them? Who destroyed the Oklahamo federal building? are really people this blind to history that we quickly resort to insults, and villifying other groups? even if the accused were responsible, how does that change the fact that there are tons of people from teh same group who are just as hardworking in the United States? What exactly do we achieve, by supporting dictators only at the end to have it severely backlash in our own very faces!

How ironic Mr. molecularbiorules that you refer to the quote

"eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth"....have I confused my religions up, I don't know much about Islam, but didn't that FIRST appear in Judaism? How funny, that you refer to a quote that appears in the Torah, WHICH I remind you was later changed in the Thalmud, which changed the concept of revenge to monetary compensation?!?!?.....

maybe we should also blame Abraham for the concept of "Sacrificing are own child for god"...

you know to most agnostics, or atheists, this judeo-christian-islamic concept is the root of all barbarism?

TO BE ASKED BY GOD TO SACRIFICE YOUR OWN SON...oh yah and it was a TEST, but why WOULD A JUST GOD ASK ANY of his followers to sacrifice his own son....

hmm, and I wonder where the concept of martyrdom started

I really feel for the children born into this faith because their innate good and innocence is ripped apart and brainwashed with hate and ignorance.

It's really ironic that you write this, KoStarring Me, because I have never read a post as flagrantly ignorant and hateful as yours was. Your depiction of the Islamic faith demonstrates that you know nothing about Islam. The action of "Islamic" terrorists are in fact completely un-Islamic as well as rejoicing over the death of anyone. Islam promotes peace, community, and selflessness. The jihad that you describe as the "killing of others in the name of God" is a distortion of the truth; simply, jihad can be thought of as a sacrifice in the name of God. It can be in the form of acting in a way that is difficult for the sake of God, and it can also mean sacrificing your life in the name of God. Somehow, Islamic terrorists have gone way overboard with the latter interpretation of jihad and twisted the concept to condone their actions . If today's tragedy is indeed found to be an attempt at Islamic jihad, it does not mean the action was a jihad or that the religion condones killing! How can you not see that? I don't know his heart, but in my opinion, Osama bin Laden is not a Muslim, and certainly does not reflect an Islamic philosophy in his actions. This same religious distortion can be seen in many cults that claim a religious foundation--I don't know any Christians that would defend the flaming cross of the KKK to be a symbol of Christian doctrine.

It makes me really sad to see Palestinians celebrating over the deaths of Americans, but I also cannot judge their actions--I dont know where they're coming from or how America is perceived to them. I also dont believe that the actions of these few necessarily reflect the actions of the entire country. And yes we are guilty of the same thing--Americans celebrated when we dropped the atomic bomb on Japan, and all over this board people are posting about how they can't wait to get revenge and kill more people. I'm not saying that the people who did this shouldn't be punished--they most certainly should be. However, I don't think an entire country or religion should be retaliated against because of the actions of a small group of people.

Today has been one of the most horrific days of my life, and I cannot describe to you how this day has affected my friends, family, and myself. As many other people have been asking, let's not produce any more hate by pointing our fingers prematurely and stereotyping races and religions. Realize that this is a great tragedy for our country, affecting thousands of people directly, pray for the safety of the people in NY and the pentagon, and realize that there are American Muslims praying for their safety as well.

hey here is an idea. Why don't we just kill everyone including ourselves regardless of religion then you damned fools will quit bitcing about religion. Religion has caused more death ad chaos than will ever be known. So drop the issue and seek out vengance regardless of this petty issue. If you are of one of religions and don't like Americans getting pissed at seeing the Palastine people dancing in the streets and having a parade because thousands of our brothers died then as soon as the AP's open up then get the hell out! If you cannot put your damned religion, nationality, and race aside then you are not wanted here. We do not need a country that is more divided than it is.

Man this is some serious stuff. I was completely stunned when I learned about it on the news. But what really got me is that when I went to work, I was told that two women (sisters) weren't coming in because their parents were on Flight 11 that crashed into the Tower. I was completely taken aback! This is the worst day ever. NO ONE SHOULD HAVE ANTHING TO COMPLAIN ABOUT UNLESS YOU WERE DIRECTLY INVOLVED IN THIS! It just puts a whole new perspective on things. I actually wrote a column on this whole thing for the local paper because I'm so beside myself.

Well, everyone, good night and be thankful you're still here.

How can you say they were not cheering for the fact that the US and the rest of the world will finally have to really look at this issue and now know they are serious? Are the human instincts that different between Americans and Palestinians that we would never fathom cheering for the death of another human, instead cheering for the end result, but Palestinians think just the opposite? fudd, I expected more from you.

It's complexity in arrangement is certainly in line of bin Laden's work. There's been reports of phone calls between bin Laden and people on the plane. So I collect this info and I think he was involved, does that make me a racist?"

maybe you should reconsider re-reading the post...

if Bin Ladin is at fault, bomb of all afghanistan until his dead...no that won't make you a racist...

villifing an ethnic or religious group in USA, will make anyone a racist...whether you villify Irish, Italians, Jews, Arabs, Christians, Muslims or Atheists....

Pearl Harbor had nothing to do with Japanese americans...saying anti-japanese epithets is racist......there is no reason to bash minority ethnic or religious groups in the USA that have no ties with afghanistan...

Just so you know Jamier. I have notified the administrators of this website, on your "moderation."

I personally, did not see any email address for Mr. Molecularbiorules for his "intellectual comment on page 1". If you however, have an email address which is not disclosed to the public, and you have sent a "private" email to the specified individual, then please accept my apology...

I have copied comments on BOTH Sides that are bordering insults, and I have sent the copies to one of the administrators in this site including the one from our moderator, so that no one can reedit their statements....

I have also asked the administrator to "moderate" my replies as well, and if I have insulted anyone here on either side I apologize ahead of time...but I feel having the administrator here is best....they should definitely look into this to monitor both sides...

We shouldn't generalize any group including, Jews, Muslims, Christians, Agnostics (yes we are people as well), or atheists...

Student Doctor Network, has been beneficial to all of us, ON EVERY SIDE....we have all helped each other in great ways...if we let bitter hatred come between members on this side, then we do a great diservice to the terrific administrators of SDN who have created this wonderful site....

we have all helped each other now and then, lets keep this tradition on...at this point however, I think administrators must have been notified, and I hope they look into this...

we need to bond together here. it's way past midnight and my television is blaring footage from Manhattan and DC. It's terribly humbling. But more shocking are the comments I've read on this forum. I understand that lots of people are opinionated about this event...and I respect that. But to make personal attacks on each other - that's the breakdown we need to avoid. I don't agree with snubbing a whole ethnicity because of their suspected affiliation with the attacks. Nor do I condone mistreating a person because they believe we "should" snub an entire race. Many are in shock, we have to realize this. We should all be supportive of one another in this time of grief. I agree...we need to lighten the mood. I like Kit Kats, and the occasional Twix.

you guys need to calm down and stop attacking each others posts...

My brother works in World Trade 2. No one has heard from him. My hands are shaking, and my mother is falling apart. I just stopped home to get some clothes. I don't know why I turned my computer on and came here.

Those of you who are angry and yelling and arguing with eachother, you're not helping. You made me feel worse.

I won't be back, at least for a while. Medical school and everything else is on hold.

racergirl, I am so so sorry ... My thoughts are with you today. I wish from the bottom of my heart that you find good news.
Don't lose hope.

I find myself, a person dedicated to health & humanity, wanting these people to pay, to suffer. What I find even more self reprehensible is that when my 12 year old son says "attack them, kill them," I have to force myself to say the words that I know a mother should say, while in my heart I want to scream the same thing. While in my heart and soul I want justice, justice inevitably means that innocent people will die along with the monsters responsible. My husband, a retired Navy Senior Chief who dedicates his life and career to the national security of the United States, will help me remind my son of this when he "celebrates" the retrbution we as a country achieve in war. If we dance in the streets in celebration, we are no less reprehensible than the Palestinians portrayed in the news. War is sometimes inevitable, and a necessary evil. Evil has done this to us.
