I am a 2nd year clinical doctoral student. I am really involved in research, I have a research fellowship with Brown University in which I study HIV/AIDS, and I have presented (posters also) a lot since starting my program. I am concerned because I have four B's thus far, 3.7 GPA, and I got a B in my first practicum. I am trying to balence my rsearch and clinical skill right now.

Question: Is it still possible for me to get an internship with what I have and how do I search for more research oriented sites. Are they more compettitive and what will I need to be a compettitve candidate?

Most people worry about getting an internship, I don’t think you will have any problem with your GPA. What led to the B in your first practicum?

The internship process is so complex - grades alone aren't going to make or break your applications. However, you may want to talk to your clinical supervisor to get some feedback about your grade. That way, you can make the effort to improve in that area. Along those same lines, you should really focus on getting strong letters of recommendation, so that you have people attesting to both your research skill and clinical acumen. If you are gunning for a more research-oriented internship, you should also be working on getting papers published.

If you are doing a research practicum at Brown, I would recommend that you talk to the current postdocs about which internship sites are a good fit for you - in terms of your background and protected research time in the field that you study. After all, the postdocs have just recently gone through all of this themselves. Your supervisors will also be able to recommend sites that are a good match - I imagine that they probably even collaborate with some of the people at those sites.

Good luck!

My poor writing skills and some diagnosis issues. My conceptulization of the cases were right on, but my poor grammer and sentence structure overshadowed that. Plus, I took an over load; might have played a role.

Given that this was your first practicum, you're only at the beginning of your clinical training. Contact your university for English grammar and language classes, get someone to proofread your reports (with identifying info removed) prior to handing them in....

Yes, I must hire an editor. I have one, but she lives out-of-state. When the winter-break is up, I will search for another one. Thanks for the tip.
