Hi, I'm preparing a school list for the 2019-2020 application cycle and I my main concern is my GPA and weak research. I was wondering if it would even be worth it to apply to upper mid tier schools given this weaknesses. I'm planning on doing research during the application year.
Year in school: Graduated 2018
Country/state of residence: NY
Major: Biochemistry + Molecular Bio
Schools to which you are applying: figuring that out now
Cumulative GPA: ~3.35 upward trend (2.4 -> 3.8)
SMP GPA: 4.0 (majority M1 classes, graded on their curve)
Science GPA: ~3.2 (Cs and Ds in intro sci classes during freshman year)
MCAT Score(s): 521
Research: only 1 year in a physiology lab, no pub, no poster. Worked with human research participants. Probably about 100 hours? PI liked me
Volunteering (clinical): ~150 hrs (1year) cookie cutter hospital volunteering (split over 2 hospitals), ~150 hours free clinic, ~100 hours (1 summer) tutoring children in psychiatric unit, ~100 hours addiction group coordinator for underserved population
Physician shadowing: ~25 hours with 2 specialties (reaching out to physicans to complete more)
Non-clinical volunteering: ~300 hours (3 summers) with a start up feeding the homeless , ~75 hours (1 summer) tutoring teens who have gone to jail to attain their high school equivalency, ~175 hours (1 year) needle exchange volunteer
Extracurricular activities: Photography, TA for a biochemistry class (1 sem)
Employment history: part time food service/barista all 4 years of undergrad, SAT tutor senior year
Immediate family members in medicine? (y/n): nope
Specialty of interest: Psychiatry. A lot of my extracurrics show this. Psych unit tutoring -> needle exchange -> addiction recovery group coordinator
Graduate degrees: SMP program for GPA repair
Interest in rural health (y/n): no
Other Important Info: ORM, upward trend in GPA, 4-5 W's on transcript, IA alcohol freshman year
My application will be mostly lower tier MD but do I have a chance at schools like Icahn? Einstein? USC?
Should I include D.O schools?
What are things that I can do from now until June to bolster my chances?
