Would taking orgo over the summer be a bad idea?

Hi everyone,

Not sure if anyone has posted about something similair recently so forgive me if they have. I am planning on taking organic chemistry this summer, as although I am comfortable with taking a gap year, I would like to have the option not to but if I don’t take organic chemistry this summer I won’t be done with my prereqs in time for the mcat (I’m gonna be a junior this fall). Also courses are 50% cheaper this summer and as I’m not the greatest at chemistry, I’ll hopefully be better able to focus without taking 5 other courses at the same time. But my advising department emailed me back and said that I shouldn’t take it this summer as medical schools do not like seeing students take prereq’s over the summer. I thought due to coronavirus it may not be looked at as poorly. Does anyone have any advice on what I should do?

I took orgo 1 and 2 over the summer, still accepted at several MD schools. I don't think it matters that much in normal times, much less during COVID-19.

Most of the objection to taking required courses in the summer is taking them at schools that are not as rigorous as your home institution. If you are taking them at your home institution, there should be no problem... it won't even be noticable.

I did Ochem 1 w/ lab as a summer intensive and it was an excellent decision.

having a better student/teacher ratio meant I got a lot of focused attention and ended up with the grade I wanted.
