I thought a poll on this topic might be a good idea.

There are two questions.

Would you apply if salaries of doctors were below 50K?

What if their salaries were between 50K and 100K?

well it all depends...that is hwo it is in sweden

and they still have pple going into medicine

but the question is...will medical school be free?

it is free in sweden also....if that's the case, then yah..I would go into it, at least I'm guaranteed 50K ? 🙂

Yeah - medicine is great and I love helping people -- but there's also a thing called SURVIVAL - and $50k would barely pay for rent in the Bay Area.

I think nobody in their right mind goes into medicine ONLY because of the money (for obvious reasons I'm sure everybody's aware of), BUT still... I'm not gonna go $150,000+ in debt so I can go out and make $50,000/yr... I'd starve to death, then my future wife would go next, then my kids can eat our bodies I guess... but that'll only last them a couple months. I'd rather become a teacher, which in my opinion is almost an equally rewarding profession, and I get to work with kids which would be great.

As long as the tuition were free all the way through (including ugrad), I'd still go to med school if I were making 50k a year. I'm an ex-ballet dancer. I'm used to poverty, and I'm used to making squat for what I love. And don't even start with me about sacrifices - knee joints, hip joints, foot reconstruction, arthritis...

I'm sorry, I think it's really a meaningless question in this hypothetical situation.

IF school were free, IF I didn't have to pay a staff, IF I didn't have to worry about ever being sued, IF the government were going to purchase my equipment. . . IF I wasn't going to work 80-100 hours a week . . . etc, ad nauseum.

In short, if all else were equal and I could rest assured with walking away with $50K a year, which is what I have to assume you mean. Yes, I would love to be a physician just because its an incredible way to go through life- if you're not working 80 hour weeks. (*sigh*- trying not to think about it)

If I was at Wake Forest I would say No way Jose to 50 grande.

Wow,. those are some pretty interesting poll results.

I can make more than that as a P.A. without going back to school, so no to a and b.
