If you needed to have cataract surgery, would you let someone who just finished being chief optho resident at vcu or uva perform it? Or would you look for someone with more years of experience?

OP mentioned on reddit that they have an ICL so it would be an ICL explant plus CEIOL. I would have a refractive specialist do it, not a recent comprehensive ophthalmology grad.

It’s really hard to know how good of a surgeon someone is without seeing them work, they could be experienced but clumsy/lazy or new grad but very conscientious and sharp, overall though the more experience the better as a general rule obviously so definitely prefer not a new grad

FYI, chief resident at these institutions mean nothing. It's typically an administrative position assigned on a rotating basis. Very few programs have a traditional chief resident year (staying an extra year after residency).

If you truly have an ICL and need it explanted, I would do as airplanes said and seek out a refractive surgeon experienced with managing these scenarios. I can tell you first hand that freshly graduated residents from the Virginia programs without fellowship training should not be doing your surgery with your expectations (no knock to them).
