writing sample

Quick question regarding PhD apps. Several of the schools I am applying to (not clinical, if it matters) are asking for a writing sample or two. What are they looking for? A research paper? This is separate from the SOP. I can't imagine they want to read several of my long ass papers, but maybe?

A research paper would work, but if you don't have one then a class paper will do. I can't speak for all programs, but some do read the writing samples regardless of length.
