Was wondering how all the Alaska hopefuls did on their recent interviews. Mines was pretty good and I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Dr. Samson, who is actually a very nice man - I enjoyed the interaction a lot!!! Not sure of my chances though because the competition is pretty fierce, and I met a lot of really excellent applicants when I was there. Hey, I gave it my best shot and I really do not think there is anything I can do to improve my chances. It sometimes comes down to the luck of the draw. I wish you all luck and it would be nice if we could all get in.

Mine went better than I could ever have hoped for. Thanks to all the helpful SDNers who offered me advice regarding the "stress interview." :) My interviewers were Drs. Southworth and Hickel, and a 4th year. My multicultural interview was a little weird, because I had to pull the guy out of a meeting and he seemed annoyed that Spanish wasn't spoken in my home, despite the fact that it was clearly stated on my AMCAS app.

Good luck to you WMN, and to jdub and mpp!! :) And it was nice to meet you, mpp! :D

I just called the AK WWAMI office to better gauge my chances. There were 62 applicants this year, down from 72 last year. Of course the number of slots stays the same at 10. Last year they took 6 off a waitlist of 10. Good luck everyone!! Anyone have the nerve to call? :p

Just curious whether toledo will surface again. I took his post seriously, WMN. Am I terribly gullible?

my interview seemed to have gone really well. the little committee was out going and pretty conversational. it was my sixth interview this year so i was pretty prepared and relaxed, unlike last year. they also seemed to have liked me, but there are so many factors.

i was put on the competive applicant thingy 3 days after my interview though, and now i am suppose to hear something via mail by at least monday.

i was the 9th alternate last year, so i am hoping to make some improvement on that, but a 1/6 probablility of acceptance isn't the greatest, so i am not holding my breath. i hope you guys hear some good news soon.

actually I am a she and not a he. I had to call the admissions office at u of w to change my address because I left grad school earlier in the month and I have had a horrible time getting my new telephone and address updated with AMCAS. So, I was simply calling all the schools that I had interviewed at and not heard from yet in order to personally change the info and the admin staff I ended up talking with for WWAMIO said "oh by the way thanks for the address change because congradulations you got in". Ironically as well, the only way I discovered SDN is because I was telling a med student (last year applicant) of my tale of woe on trying to change my address and telephone number and they suggested I log on here to get some ideas of how to deal with AMCAS. I just happened to come across a WWAMI posting.

So, if anyone else is planning on attending let me know. By the way I interviewed on the 20th if that helps and I am from talkeetna. As a side note, I am also a handler for dog musher gerald sousa this weekend in the Iditarod sled dog race so wish him well in his quest to be the first rookie to nome.

by the way how does one use the gremlins. I tried to add one but it didn't work

Are you going to be at all the checkpoints for him?

Good luck to all the WWAMI applicants!!!!!! :D :D :D :D

Just learned from my Mom that I was waitlisted. Just goes to show that a good interview is no guarantee of anything.

f*m SMW, they don't even know a good thing when they see it!!! we want you at columbia anyway!!! :p

I'm sorry, SMW, they are STUPID!

Thanks, trout and Foxy. :)

Sorry to hear the news SMW - what position did you get? I know how that disappointment feels. I did get in this time but it took 3 attempts. I am honestly sorry that you will not be my class mate this year and I wish you luck wherever you choose to go.

Congratulations WMN!

It was nice to meet you as well SMW. Hopefully all will work out at UW in the end. I have yet to hear as I'm still on vacation at Squaw Valley until Monday.

I didn't feel my interview went too well but I'm keeping my fingers crossed...too many yawns by the whole interview crew (which was the same as SMW's).

Congrats, WMN!! :D I'm glad you get to keep your family in Alaska. :) Perserverence pays off!! I'm #7 on the waitlist, which seems pretty hopeless to me. Maybe mpp will get in and choose Mayo, moving me up a notch!

mpp, I hope you get to choose. Choices are nice.

jdub, what's up with you?

congratulations wmn and toledo. that is great to hear that some persistence paid off.

swm, sorry to hear that your down on the alternate list a bit, i have a good idea about how you feel.

as for me, the mail just came in for today and i still haven't recieved the letter from udub. it should be up here on monday. what's a few more days of suspence, eh?

jdub, what's up with you?•••••#7 seven is pretty good. If you look at USNEWs, two years ago they accepted 228 and 176 enrolled. If I had to guess, I think they would have offer 200 so far and will offer 28 more. So don't count yourself out yet.

Ah, Jalbrekt, if only it were so. Unfortunately, the waitlist for the AK WWAMi applicants is different than the regular UW waitlist. There are only 10 AK WWAMI slots and 10 places on the waitlist. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

•••••Although I still have yet to hear (I assume it will arrive on Monday) it would definitely be nice to have the choice as tough as it will be to decide between the two. Although the Mayo education and price are right (and the location is fine by me...weather can't be much worse than Fairbanks), UW offers too many interesting clerkship opportunities that aren't offered by Mayo.

So did you hear, mpp?

I still haven't heard. Slow mail in Fairbanks...this is always the case. I guess living on the edge of the epitome of the middle of nowhere means it takes a while for them to deliver mail. Maybe on Tuesday...

hey guys,
i straight-up got rejected. i didn't even make the waitlist this year. i had an even better interview this year . . . i am a bit frustrated.

jdub
I am sorry to hear your news. I am not sure if you have other acceptances or not, nor what you have planned if you are not successful this year, but I wanted to let you know my story. The first time I applied to WWAMI I made # 8 on the alternate list, I was rejected the second time and this year I got in. Not sure what I did right this time but I did improve my MCAT score by 3 points, took some classes to prove that I could still do it (had been out of school for 6 years) and stressed my past history of working with the medically underserved. I can imagine how you feel right now, but do not give up hope. I wish you success with your other applications.

That's too bad, jdub. :( The whole thing is such a crapshoot. I hope you have other options. :)

mpp, have you definitely chosen Mayo, or are you keeping your spot on the waitlist?
Not that I'm rushing you or anything..........

SMW,

I'm going to keep my waitlist spot for now just to see if there is any movement (do you know if they let us know if there is any waitlist movement?) as I am still very interested in the program as I can do much of my learning in Alaska.
If there isn't any movement by May, I will probably withdraw from the waitlist. I'll be sure to let you know before I let them know...

Don't feel bad about getting on the waitlist. There could be movements throughout the summer, and anything can happen. The student who was our tour guide on the interview day said he got in off the waitlist during the summer.

Tho official word from Dr Samson, last year 5 people got in off the AK waitlist (letter written in August 2001). Remember this is the number of people and not necessarily their relative position on the list. I met one girl at the interviews this year and she was # 7 and did not make it last year. Historically, only 2-3 students have been taken off the AK alternate list according to the people who interviewed me 2 years ago. Sometimes things work out for a reason, I have family here and know that I will not be moving to another state, so the committment to Alaska isn't a worry to me, but if you are not 100% sure that you want to come back to Alaska post-residency, that 5 year service might put people off.

Actually now that I think about it, perhaps what he said was they went down to #6 on the waitlist. Perhaps someone on the waitlist turned them down? If that's the case, I'm even worse off.

I'm definitely coming back to Alaska, so the 5 year obligation did not bother me in the least!
