Yale vs. Cornell vs. Mayo vs. University of Michigan vs. UCLA vs. Hopkins Bayview vs. UTSW

For someone who is thinking about getting into the best infectious disease fellowship possible, how should he rank these programs?

What about for someone who aspires to get into the best hem-onc fellowship?

Let's pretend location is not at all a factor...

Thanks.

I can't comment on ID specifically other than to say it's not that competitive so any of these places will work for you.

For Hem/Onc: Cornell = Michigan > UTSW = UCLA = Yale = Mayo > Bayview

That said, the separation isn't really that much and any of these programs (even Bayview) will give you a good shot at either of those fellowship programs.

Agree re: ID.

all these places - even Bayview - can send you to excellent heme/onc programs....but Cornell's match is absolutely ridic. Go to NYC.

Thanks guys.

I thought that Yale would be ranked much higher because all of the most prestigious med schools and fellowship programs are on East Coast, and Yale would open up those East Coast connections. Fellowship placement is largely dependent on having the right connections.

BTW, Bayview also has an outstanding match list.

Also, with the exception of Michigan, Yale's IM program and med school is ranked higher (on US News) than any of the other programs. Not sure if these rankings really matter though...

2010 IM rankings:

1 Johns Hopkins University
2 Harvard University
3 University of California--San Francisco
4 University of Pennsylvania
5 Duke University
6 University of Washington 7 University of Michigan--Ann Arbor
8 Washington University in St. Louis
9 Columbia University
10 Yale University
11 Stanford University
12 Vanderbilt University
13 University of California--Los Angeles (Geffen)
14 University of Pittsburgh
15 University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center--Dallas
16 University of Alabama--Birmingham
17 Mayo Medical School
Northwestern University (Feinberg)
19 Emory University
20 University of Iowa (Carver)
21 Cornell University (Weill)
22 University of Chicago (Pritzker)
University of Colorado--Denver
University of North Carolina--Chapel Hill
25 University of Rochester
26 Ohio State University
Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine
University of Wisconsin--Madison

They don't matter. At all. The rankings are based on NIH research dollars and have nothing to do with the clinical education aspect of the programs.

No.

http://www.usnews.com/articles/educ.../the-medical-school-rankings-methodology.html

Specialty Rankings: The rankings are based solely on ratings by medical school deans and senior faculty from the list of schools surveyed. They each identified up to 10 schools offering the best programs in each specialty area. Those receiving the most nominations in the top 10 appear here.

IMHO a pretty bad methodology, but quite different from research dollar ranking.

Michigan - (over the past 7 years)
13 University of Michigan
2 Memorial-Sloan Kettering
1 University of California San Francisco
1 University of California San Diego
1 Emory University
1 Case Western Reserve University
1 Northwestern University
1 Mt. Sinai
1 University of Pennsylvania

Cornell - (over the past 3 years)
13 Memorial-Sloan Kettering
2 Beth Israel Deaconess
1 University of California San Francisco
1 University of California San Diego
1 University of Washington
1 Montefiore
1 University of Pennsylvania

Michigan has a great list and is a fantastic program, but I'm more impressed with Cornell's match list.

Actually, I would consider those Match Lists virtually identical. Michigan is a crazy strong program. Take out the "homers" (Cornell residents matching across the street and Michigan residents matching in Ann Arbor) and you basically have the same lists.
