Please help people...please help...

i am so torn...any good /bad things people have to say would be amazing...

I'm from east, but want to try west, but think PA is not a real place b/c its suburbia...but not so high on new haven...do people party in these places?

For med school or undergrad? I'd vote yale for the former, stanford for the latter.

I'd vote Stanford for both, especially if you haven't been to the west coast much.

I am admittedly biased as I am a Yalie (undergrad class of 98) but I know that you would have an outstanding experience at Yale. You will be hardpressed to find a better or more diverse student body anywhere. The have really re-done the Yale-New Haven part of town so it is not as sketchy as it was when I was a freshman. It really is a rather quaint college town now.

However, if you really want to live in the west, Stanford is a great choice. I have heard nothing but very positive things about Stanford's curriculum-- the extra year etc.

I really wish I have this problem this time next year. Good luck!

You've gotta be sh#tting me, right?! You're smart and well-rounded enough to get into two of the top 10 med schools in the US, but you're gonna solicit the help of people you've never met to make this decision?!

i'm not trying to jump all over you, but these A vs. B threads just tick me off when they're posed as "help ME decide" - everyone has particular priorities, and it is those priorities that must be considered when anyone has to pick school A vs. B.

It's not really about having someone decide for you; soliciting the input of others can help you reflect on your own priorities. You can hear what others would view as positives and negatives, what decision they would make, and why. You might learn something new, or realize there's something you value/don't value more or less than someone else.

For me, I talked with a friend who didn't apply to law schools out west because he knew he wouldn't want to be that far from his family for so long. Made me realize that it's more of an important factor to me than I realized. Of course, I'm biased, having done a lot of this soliciting myself lately.

I'll never get the whole "school A is awesome because it is diverse." Basically, in every instance I've been to diverse schools, the less school spirit and comraderie I've seen among the students and the more students split up into cliques based upon race (actually, this holds true for diverse regions, as well). Kind of defeats the purpose.

With that being said, I don't think you can say that suburbia isn't a real place. Unless you define place by what people build on top of it. There's some gorgeous scenery that you won't have that much time to explore along the Cali coast (and inland, as well). That alone would send me westward. The weather isn't going to be perfect like it is in south cali, but you may like a little rain.

I've heard that New Haven is improving as of late, but last I visited, it still had a looong way to go.

I don't know. Go visit each place for some time.

New Haven has a good party scene and NYC isn't far away but being from CT I would like to go to the west coast simply for the weather.

Amen Brother!

Are you interested in any particular specialty?

Yale's Psychiatry program is very well-respected. But Stanford's hospital is more well-known for some other specialties.

And this is from a current Stanford students' web site:
Yale graduates tend to become specialists, but Stanford graduates tend to also go into primary care as well.

Not even a question....SMS, easily. I withdrew from Yale once i got into SMS. The curriculum structure/integration and research....Stanford....and now CLINICAL training..

I lost the link, but it's posted on one of the interview feedback for Stanford.
