Hey everybody,

This is a thread for all those that want to get their bodies into great shape, much the way their minds are. All the users in this forum are brilliant. Whether it is pre-dents trying to maximize thier undergrad years or the newest members of the class of 2007, we are all smart.

That being said the ancient Greeks held that the body and mind should both be realized to their fullest potential. This thread is for those that are either into weightlifting and fitness and want to share workouts and diets, or those that really would like to start but dont want to go to a www.meathead.com type site and be ridiculed. Ill help anybody I can on this topic. I love this stuff. If I wasnt going to school I would be getting a Phd in Kineis. Please no stupid comments, just go to the next thread if this isnt your bag.

Cheers mate,

I totally agree...as we speak I'm working on my 6 pack...one can left and need to get another 5 pack.

Cheers

Hey guys and gals...I'm not advertising but if you want to get in shape and do something good run a marathoon for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society. I raised $3200 for the last marathoon I ran for them.

If you reach your money goal they pay for your whole trip. I flew out to Helena, MT and stayed 3 days for free....well Kinda for free since I spent 3 months raising the money and training for the run.

But its a good get away...they have many locations to choose like cali, ireland, boston, nyc...so many more.

I'll tell you one thing when you visit the child your sponsoring and finish the run in their name you just feel so good. oh yeah they give 75% of the money you raise for the research on the cancer unlike some charities that only give back 20%

Just a thought

Finally, drmeathead we agree on something! j/k
I have to give you some props on your site. I love the flash.

I'll tell you my favorite one week diet. Exclude excess breads and carbs for one week. Replace it with Salmon and other high protein foods (all fish).

M,W,F lift weights, jog/run 1-2 miles

T,Th jog/run 2-5 miles

You will lose a lot, plus your face will have the "glow" of success.

By the end of this summer I will be ripped again. During the school year I cant work out as much as I would like to though.

Here's my question...

What do you think of supplementation?

I have only taken creating for two periods, both of which I was combining with a diet high in protein (not Atkins-but my regual diet with an additional 100-120 g/day of Protein).
My results may have been a lot mental, but within a few weeks I put on at least 10 pounds (probably a lot of water) but every week I was stronger (ex. max flat bench would increase 5 pounds/week).

Have you experienced similar results or is this mental?

--I'm glad that there are other people who care about their body as much as their brain (and teeth). Hopefully when I start in the Fall, I will find a lifting buddy who feels the same way!

Creatine works. Period. It reduces lactic acid production in the muscle thus allowin gthe muscle to work longer till lactic acid builds up and prevents further contracdtion. The more a muscle contracts, the more it can be broken down and the more newe muslce fiber can be generated.

Also creatine pulls water into the muscle. It will increase the size of your muscle on a strictly cosmetic level as well. But that being said, drink alot of water espically when yuo work out so you dont cramp.

Creatine helps you work harder to break your muscles down better which mean THAT WITH A A PROPER DIET AND REST you can theoretically build them up bigger than the previously were. Eiggt hours of sleep and 100-150 grams of protien are needed.

Hey all,

I've been working out for six years now and never really had the yearning to use any supplementation (ie. creatine). No offense booshwa, but is it really worth it to have possible renal damage or liver problems? In my eyes, not only is it safer to bulk up naturally, but also you're not "cheating". With that said though, I guess it also depends on your body type and the kind of body you want. I'm striving for the "not too huge, but ripped" body and have been blessed with some good genetics that allow me to build muscle fairly quickly. One of my friends though is just the opposite and he had to turn to creatine+protein diet to bulk up...it worked and he is now huge and in police academy.

Hey meathead and booshwa...where are you guys going to school next year?

I'm not really worried-I'm yet to see any evidence scientific papers that have supported these. Plus with the amount of creatine I'm taking (less than 5 grams/day) and the amount of water I drink (>6 liters/day), I'm pretty confident i'm okay. It seems like most problems have come from people who are dealing with weight control and aren't able to hydrate themselves adequately (i.e. wrestlers), or are taking way too much (i.e. "a little is good, so a lot is better" mentality).

As far as cheating, in my opinion I'm not. I'm not working out any less, not cutting any corners, not doing anything illegal...etc....
It is important to see gains when working out, and without them, it is hard to stay motivated. I'm not recommending people go out and use creatine, but in my case it seems okay. I have always been very active and my body type isn't very advantageous for putting on muscle. But in the last 3 years I've been able to put on 25 pounds of lean mass through working my butt off. I wish I was like you and could put on muscle quickly, but then again, I'm 6'3", 200 lbs., with 4% body fat, so I probably should't complain.

Anyways, I'm going to be a Trojan in the fall. What about yourself?

I agree...there have been no studies on creatine that support banning but there are cases of problems when one fails to use it properly. Just like if one fails to use a chainsaw properly they can get hurt but if they are safer it is a great help to what they want to do.

Using supplements isnt cheating it is simply giving your body everything it needs. It is much akin to making sure your car's engine has all the proper lubricants, oils, and fuels to run at a high level.

Anybody taking some serious stuff like ZMA or 1-AD?

Hello!

I think thatmost of you on this thread are males and was wondering if there are any gals looking to get in shape? I am not genetically blessed so I lift 45 min 6 days a week and do at least 30 min cardio 7 days a week. I have also cut out meat (except fish), dairy, chemicals, refined sugar and white carbos.

All these changes have shown little progress to my lower body and it is quite frustrating. Upper body is great, but I am ready to resort to liposuction for the legs. If any of you have suggestions for changes in my routine, diet or supplements please let me know. Granted-I have no desire to be a body-builder, more the Ms. Fitness type if you know what I mean. Please help if you can.

Also when do you guys plan on finding time to keep up with your workouts with school coming up?

Thanks!

Just my thoughts but here goes...

Protien builds muscle. There is no such thing as spot reduction of fat, meaning by targeting a certain area when you workout you dont just burn fat off that area.

Burning fat takes place only when metabolic rates increase and the fat is depleated at an even rate all over. That being said muscle has a higher metabolic rate than fat and more muscle has a higher metabolic rate than less muscle. So the more muscle you have the more fat you will burn. That is how a body part gets toned. By the same token you dont want to be Arnold. Please dont take offense but if you are complaining of fatty deposits, you could stand to work out your legs a little more with weights. Lunges work best for females. They round the butt whereas squats square it.

Ok now to how the muscle is built. In simple layman terms, you need protien. Any kind, dairy, red meat, chicken, fish, soy whatever. That rebuilds muscle. Lifting, running, and whatnot tear muscle down. Muscle then rebuilds bigger.

So in conclusion, bigger muscle equals more muscle, equals higher metabolic rate, equals less fat.

Eating the low fats and carbs is great!!! The no chemicals stuff would be just too hard for me. I could never do that. If you got anymore questions lemme know.

JessieDDS:

I think you sound motivated, and the only thing I would suggest is upping your cardio routine. try gradually working up to a 60-minute routine at least 2 times/week.

As for me, I have become fitness obsessed since having so much free time in this year out of college. I did dance and dance team stuff for almost 8 years, and now it's hard to find something to fill the gap.

Anyways, if anyone wants to be my early-morning workout partner at dental school, I'm down. Are there any cyclists out there? I'm looking to start training this summer.
