Finally a breakthrough (HIPAA sucks BTW). Anyways I am shadowing a real live general dentist (friend of my cousin's) on friday from 745am - noon. What kinds of things should I ask him? My goal is to put in 100 total hours of shadowing (not necessarily with this one guy alone) i was thinking after a few weeks (maybe 4) i could ask about which specialists he uses and maybe he could hook me up with some shadowing there. My goals are to gain an understaing of procedures, office management, staff relationships, # patients per hour (in order to make $), quality control, and insurance if possible.

Please advise any worthwhile things i should learn/do. :)

Congratulation! Try to absorb as much information as prossible for various procedures, learn the reason why one step must be performed before another. Also learn the name of the instruments they use for different procedures. Try to get some dental assisting if you can because it is a wonderful experience and a chance to be as closely involved into different procedures as possible without being a dentist.

      Enjoy your experience!

How did you went through all these? I mean I have been asking many dentists in the town where I live or even in the neighboring town. I think I already asked every single one of them by calling through the phone, explaining myself that I am going to dental school and I would like to have some experience in dental fields and that I want to do some shadowing for several hours a week. Every single one of them turned me down. I have been doing this since last year, however my ortho is willing to have me shadowed her but the thing is she live 45 minutes away from me and I don't drive, I just came here foreign country and don't have a license to drive yet.I could take the public transportation but it takes me 2 hours to go to the dental office where she works. Please help! Iill be applying this summer hopefully, I need to have a little experience, although I currently volunteering at the ER but it's different if in the dental office. But do you think in it could be enough?

The first shadowing experience I got was 45 minutes away too. But, I have a car and a drivers license.

I was just happy for the oppurtunity. Sometimes you have to take what you can get. Do you have someone who can drive you?
