Is there any conventional way for me to thank a student that is hosting me for my interview? After bumming his couch for the night, I feel that a simple "thanks" isn't enough. Is it excessive to give a small gift of some sort?

A gift card to Starbucks, as mentioned earlier, is a gift that pretty much everybody would enjoy. After talking to the student host, you might get an idea of what they'd like better though, so you might end up buying them something else entirely-- but if you have no idea, then a gift card is always nice.

Conversely, how do you un-thank a student host who flakes on you with no explanation?

Mail them an envelope full of anthrax so they can start their infectious disease rotation early 🙂

how awkward would it be to sleep with your student host and then run into them when you matriculate at that school the following fall? 😛

Haha. I think that'd be hilarious! All my hosts have been my gender so far though, so I haven't had the opportunity to entertain that idea.

I just bought little boxes of chocolates (I'm a girl, as are my hosts). I'd second the starbucks idea for guys though. I also carry around my portable hardrive because it has my application materials, AND because I have a whole bunch of movies and music on it (it's 160 gigs) and I always offer my hosts any media they might want. They're usually more excited about my library of random TV shows than my chocolates...lol

What student wouldn't turn down free stuff? Woo!

I used to take my student hosts (and their roommates out to dinner- this was a great time to pump them for information). I had an older student host (with a wife and kids) I gave them a bottle of wine. I never gave gift cards personally, but the sound like a great idea.

Decent dinner is a great idea. I really like that Starbucks card idea.

Most people probably wouldn't care at all even if you just said a sincere "thank you." They host b/c a) they are good people and b) they are proud of the school.
