Forgive me if this has been covered before.. I may need a private student loan to cover living expenses during vet school. Does anyone have any recommendations as far as which ones are good/better than others? Thanks 🙂

Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought federal aid covers cost of living too? Discover card student loans looked interesting, but I have not used them yet, so I would look up more info. 🙂

Check with your school to see if this is strictly necessary. Illinois factors cost of living in to their total cost (they even include enough for a night on the town ever now and again), so you might not need to take out additional loans. =)

My Plan B was to go to my credit union and see what they could offer me - but I obviously haven't looked in to that route too seriously (heh...).

Schools generally provide a very generous cost of living estimate that should cover all of your expenses. You REALLY want to stick with government loans wherever possible because they will give you better rates. I *think* cost of living can be negotiated with your school if you have dependents.

Ok, Thats what I was thinking too. The FAFSA confirmation said I may be eligible for 20,500 in the Stafford loan, and A&M projects ~$29,000 for the first year in COA including living expenses so I wasn't sure if the government financial aid would be higher than what was projected on the FAFSA site.

Thanks for your responses guys.

I believe health professional students are eligible for 40,500 in Stafford loans. 😀

That's correct. I don't know why the FAFSA website doesn't reflect that number, but $40,500 is what Penn & Wisconsin both told me.

p.s. I'm really envious of your COA... I calculated the total amount that I will owe Penn over the next 4 years. And decided that I could buy a small island for that price. Good thing I'd rather be a vet than an island hermit!

That's why I am so relieved to pay IS tuition. OOS would have been double that.

When I filled out my FAFSA, it told me I was only eligible for $20,000. That barely covers the cost of IS tuition for me. 🙁

Did I fill something out incorrectly on my FAFSA, then?

Nope, you're most likely fine. It said that on my FAFSA as well. They list the number given for most graduate programs, and health professional programs (med, dental, pharm, vet, etc.) are allowed to take out a higher amount of loans because of the associated cost of the program. So if you were going to get a non-thesis based masters (which schools generally won't pay for), you could get 20k a year. If you're going to vet school, you should get 40.5k. If you're concerned, you can always call LSU on Monday to double-check!

Thanks! This worried me for a minute. 😱
