Anyone else have a problem with this when stressed? It's not a problem usually but I'm in my surgery rotation and it's killing me. I have to wake up at 4:45 anyway, but I always wake up between 2-3am and can't go back to sleep. When I wake up, I still feel tired but just start thinking about all the crap I have to do all day and can't fall back to sleep.

I try going to bed earlier at 9 instead of 10 but then I just wake up an hour earlier lol. Like I said in the title, it's a middle-of-the-night problem only. I can fall asleep instantly whenever. I also cut out napping during the day but hasn't helped. I'm stuck in this 5-5.5 hour sleep habit and I always wake up regardless of how tired I feel and then feel tired throughout the day. I haven't tried any sleep meds, like diphenhydramine, since I don't have trouble falling sleep but rather maintaining sleep. I'm afraid if I took it at 3am then it'd just make me groggy all day. Plus, honestly, the school-related thoughts in my head have always been able to overcome the drowsy effect from sedating meds in the past.

Anyone with this problem have any successful methods to get a few more hours of sleep? Generally stress prevents ppl from falling asleep, but it's having the opposite effect on me haha. I've had this problem before and my sleep wake cycle always returns to normal after I return to normal 8-5 work hours. I just need a quick fix for this surgery rotation. Thanks!

I'm not in my surgery rotation just yet, but I have had some trouble with sleeping and general fatigue. What has in fact helped has been "Mindfulness Meditation." I'm not a hippie, nor a great defender of alternative medicine, but there is a good amount of research on this particular subject:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22377965
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21071182

cool stuff.

Now what I do: I either open youtube or spotify and search for Deepak Chopra, open him under artists in spotify (or click mindfulness meditation in youtube). Spotify has a ton of stuff, and actually a whole guided meditation for sleep improvement by him. Try it everyday for a week at the same time and see if it works. If not, well...it can't hurt.

Stick with it long enough and your body will catch up so that you will be able to sleep anywhere. In the short term, if you want to try to add sleep try something like chamomile tea, valerian root, or melatonin before bedtime. On a similar note, sleep hygiene is important. Find a quiet, dark room with a comfortable temperature and sleeping arrangement.

B and B. Beer and a benadryl lol
I do use this on mornings I can't sleep after a night shift.

And I would assume, since you are an attending, you would know how bad alcohol induced sleep is for you...
