I have started a petition at whitehouse.gov to ask President Obama to reform student loans and lock the interest rate at 1%. I urge you to please visit the petition at
http://wh.gov/QXwn and sign the petition. We have only 2 weeks to get the required signatures to have President Obama address this national issue. Please spread this information to College and Grad students around the country. I have exhausted Facebook, however we need more people to be passionate about the student loan crisis and encourage everyone we know to sign this petition now.

I like the idea, but there is a slight problem - the president doesn't make those decisions. Ignoring for the moment the fact that the president does not have the power to make laws, federally funded student loans are a budget concern that must be handled by congress. Considering the fact that congress just eliminated the subsidized (government pays interest until graduation) student loan programme for graduate students, it seems unlikely that they will choose to slash the interest rate on the unsubsidized loans from 6.8% to 1%. You would probably have better luck petitioning for the reinstatement of the subsidized loan programme.

P.S. - I hate to sound so defeatist, but the plights of doctors/medical students don't really garner much sympathy these days.
