Resources

* Study Partner

o Find 1-2 other people maximum to study with. Together you will motivate, support, and learn from one another.
o Share or split costs of DAT study material.

* DAT Information: ADA Dental Admission Test (DAT) Website

o DAT Examinee Guide
o Test Specifications

* Kaplan Online Resources: (The Kaplan classroom course is not necessary if you are sufficiently disciplined and motivated.)

o Kaplan Review Notes (Big Blue Book)
+ Overall good book, but biology section is not sufficient.
o Kaplan DAT Lesson Book (Think White Book)
+ Know everything in this book, since it is basic knowledge that is commonly tested.
o Kaplan Flash Cards
+ Basic information that you must know.

* Biology

o Cliff's AP Biology / Barron's AP Biology (only buy one)
+ Many people prefer Cliff's since it strikes a nice balance between detail and readablity.
o Schaum's Outline of Biology
+ Many find Schaum's too detailed and very dry.

* Natural Sciences

o DAT Destroyer
o General Chemistry:

+ The Princeton Review Hyperlearning MCAT Physical Sciences Review
# I have not personally used this, so I can't comment. Read this link for more information.

* Perceptual Ability
* Crack DAT PAT / MATH - Royal Flush Edition
o Very comparable to the real DAT.

* Quantitative Reasoning

o Crack DAT PAT / MATH - Royal Flush Edition
+ About ~3 mistakes per math test on average. You should be scoring ~19+ fairly constantly. The test is easier than the real DAT so additional quantitative reasoning resources are necessary.
o Top Score
+ Very comparable to the real DAT. Learn the concepts behind every question.
o DAT Achiever
+ Very comparable to the real DAT. Learn the concepts behind every question.

* Practice Tests

o Top Score
+ Very similar to the real test overall. Natural sciences is very similar, however, the real test can differ quite a bit depending on what version of the DAT you receive. PAT is harder on the real test. RC and QR are very similar to that of the real test. Learn the concepts behind each question.
o DAT Achiever
+ Bio seems more "nit-picky" and more difficult than the real test. G-Chem and O-Chem are harder than the real test. PAT is much harder than the real test, but fairly similar. RC and QR are very similar to that of the real test. Again learn the concepts behind each question.
o Sample DAT from the ADA.

* Websites

o Student Doctor Network (SDN) Forums – DAT Discussions
+ Stay up to date on current DAT issues and find out what to expect. For example, which sections are difficult and why. What types of difficult questions are people receiving on the test (ie: lots of IR/H-NMR/C-13 or ‘crazy' Bio or hard RC passages –FRAP/Piano/Ethics)

* Supplies

o 2x Laminated Sheets (only if Kaplan did not provided one)
o 1x 4-pack thin tip low odor dry erase pens
o 1-3x large composition books for notes on biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, quant., etc.
o 2-4x 100 ct. 3x5 Index Cards

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to Study

* My motto is "study smarter not harder." Basically that means quality over quantity. Make your study sessions count.
* Change study locations to keep things fresh and interesting.
* Study at least 5-10 hours a day. I like to subtract 1-2 hours from my gross study time due to breaks, talking, lunch, and other distractions to find my net study time which should be around 8-9 hours a day. Realize that "the more you put into the DATs the more you get out of it," guaranteed. Always picture your goal in your mind when things get difficult.
* Don't always study in absolute silence since during the actual DAT there will be keyboard clicking from people typing essays and people walking in and out of the room.
* Practice on laminated sheets since this is what the real test uses. I was given 2 thick black dry erase makers (should have been fine tip) with 2 teal/green colored 8.5 x 11 checker board (like graph paper) laminated sheets, and a large dry eraser.
* Do PROBLEMS. The test is problems, not your ability to memorize or read things. You learn the most from testing yourself and doing lots of problems. Most importantly is to learn from your mistakes and understand the overall concepts so that you can do any type of problem.
* Eat properly and sleep well, you can't learn if you don't take care of your body.
* Strongly avoid taking classes, working, or doing extra circulars while studying in order to put your full focus and effort into studying and doing well.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to Learn

* Use reasoning and critical thinking to understand a concept or problem. This way you can always reason through to the correct answer, especially during the test.
* Use mnemonics when necessary by searching for them on the internet or making your own.
* Use associations between what you already know and what your trying to learn.

Time Line: Assuming 10 weeks at 5-10 hours per day.

Modify the time line to your needs.

* Week 1
o Read entire Kaplan Review Notes and Lesson Book
o Create O-Chem flashcards based on DAT Destroyer Road Maps (found in middle of O-Chem solutions) and Kaplan Review Notes. Don't worry about random or "weird" reactions, simply the main ones that you should know.
o Begin to review Kaplan flash cards
* Week 2
o Do all of the Kaplan online workshops and take notes

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DAT Sections

Biology

* Description

Very broad, very random. Questions are rather straight forward and broad. Use critical thinking skills to answer difficult questions. Use process of elimination and avoid ‘distracter' answers.

* How to Study
o Read Kaplan's Review Notes twice and take hand written notes once. Take the quiz at the end of each section!
o Memorize and know Kaplan's DAT Lesson Book.
o Initially use Kaplan's Bio flash cards, then separate the select few that you still need to practice.
o Read Cliff's AP Biology, Barron's AP Biology, or Schaum's Biology at least twice if not more, and take hand written notes when applicable. Do all the section quizzes or problems.
o Make your own flash cards based on the above readings and questions from practice tests.
o Do ~40 Destroyer Bio questions initially and study the main concepts/topics from the questions you got wrong. After you have reviewed the topics you got wrong, do another ~40 Destroyer Bio questions. Modify and repeat as necessary. Remember quality over quantity.
o Take Kaplan Quizzes and Subject Tests. Make any necessary flash cards.
o Take Kaplan, Top Score, and/or Achiever practice tests. Make flash cards for important questions/concepts.
* Additional Information
o Don't spend too much time studying for this section. Don't focus too much on the details of any one topic.
o Read each question twice and look for keywords. Ask yourself, "What is the question really asking?"
o Don't focus too much on the sections you do know, rather study the sections you don't know as well like embryology, experimental biology, etc.

General Chemistry

* Description

Few calculations overall, rather you choose the correct setup from the answer choices. No super difficult calculation problems. Mostly conceptual based questions.

* How to Study
o Quickly read Kaplan's Review Notes twice and take hand written notes on important topics. Take the quiz at the end of each section!
o Memorize and know Kaplan's DAT Lesson Book.
o Review and know Kaplan's G-Chem flash cards.
o Read The Princeton Review Hyperlearning MCAT Physical Sciences Review for a conceptual approach.
o Do ~30 Destroyer G-Chem questions initially and study the main concepts/topics from the questions you got wrong. After you have reviewed the topics you got wrong, do another ~30 Destroyer G-Chem questions. Modify and repeat as necessary. Remember quality over quantity.
o Take Kaplan Quizzes and Subject Tests. Make any necessary flash cards.
o Take Kaplan, Top Score, and/or Achiever practice tests. Make flash cards for important questions/concepts.
* Notes
o Click here for G-Chem notes.
* Additional Information
o Important/main topics are guaranteed to be on the DAT so make sure you can nail those concepts and problems. Review and learn these concepts until you are comfortable.
o Destroyer is great for calculations, however, some versions of the DAT have very few calculations. This is where Kaplan's subject tests and other practice tests come in handy.

Organic Chemistry

* Description

Know the details of SN1/SN2/E1/E2 really well. Know IR/H-NMR/C-NMR fairly well. Know the main and important lab techniques. Know acidity, basicity, in relation to EWG and EDG really well. Know boiling, melting, etc. points.

* How to Study
o Make flash cards of each reaction from Destroyer's O-Chem road maps 1-6 on pages 101-106 (ignore the Diazonium Road Map).
o Read and make any additional flash cards from Kaplan's Review Notes and DAT Lesson book (ie: carbohydrates, SN1/SN2/E1/E2, etc). Take the quiz at the end of each section of the review notes!
o Memorize and know Kaplan's DAT Lesson Book.
o Initially use Kaplan's O-Chem flash cards, then separate the select few that you still need to practice.
o Do ~30 Destroyer Bio questions initially and study the main concepts/topics from the questions you got wrong. After you have reviewed the topics you got wrong, do another ~30 Destroyer Bio questions. Modify and repeat as necessary. Remember quality over quantity. Ignore any super difficult or weird problems. The DAT is very straight forward overall and you need not worry about such problems.
o Take Kaplan Quizzes and Subject Tests. There are many "conceptual" O-Chem questions on the DAT that Kaplan prepares you for. Make any necessary flash cards.
o Take Kaplan, Top Score, and/or Achiever practice tests. Make flash cards for important questions/concepts.
* Additional Information
o Read Student Doctor Network (SDN) forums for current information on difficult topics on O-Chem (ie: lab techniques, IR/NMR/C-13/etc.)

Perceptual Ability

* Description

Keyhole, Top-Front-End (TFE), Angles, Hole Punching, Cube Counting, Pattern Folding

* How to Study
o Using the Royal Flush Edition of Crack DAT PAT, develop techniques for the following:
+ 2500 Angle Ranking Bonus Questions
+ 4500 Cube Counting Bonus Questions
+ 2500 Hole Punching Bonus Questions
o Take a full length PAT at least every week.
* Notes

* Additional Information
o Most importantly, two weeks before test date, take a full length Crack DAT PAT test at least once every 2 days.

Reading Comprehension

* Description

No need to ‘study' for this section. Use search & destroy method as outlined below.

* Strategies
o Use search & destroy which includes reading 1-2 fact based questions at a time and searching the passage for their answer. Find the key words or phrases in the fact based question to use when skimming the passage. Once you find the sentence containing the keyword, read the entire sentence and double check that you answered the question properly. Spend a few seconds to check your answer and quickly read the entire sentence to save you time in the long run.
o If you encounter a tone or non-fact based question mark it and move onto the next fact based question. You should mark no more than ~5 non-fact based questions per passage. Once you have completed all the easy fact based questions go back and answer all the non-fact based (tone) questions, and mark any necessary questions you are unsure of which should be 0-2 questions per passage. Now move onto the next passage and repeat the above strategy. Once you have read all the passages go back to your marked questions which should be about 2-6. Remember to stay clam and focused with a clear open mind.
o Check SDN forums for the current difficult RC passages such as Ethics/Piano/FRAP and leave these passages until the end.
* How to Study
o Take Kaplan, Top Score, and/or Achiever practice tests to learn time management and proper pacing.
* Additional Information
o Use SDN to discover known difficult passage like Ethics/Piano/FRAP/ and leave them until the end.
o Become good at skimming and searching quickly for key words or phrases.
o Stay calm and focused.
o Note that on the real DAT, if you are scrolled down in the passage and click next, the scroll bar will jump up to the top of the passage automatically. This is rather annoying and causes some to lose their place, especially if several questions are in order within the passage.

Quantitative Reasoning

* Description

Time is of the essence. Be able to do all the non-word problems correctly. Memorize the basic conversions outlined below.

* How to Study
o Take several Crack DAT Math practice tests to learn how to effectively manage your time. At first skip all difficult word problems and practice at getting every non-word problem question correct.
o Take Kaplan, Top Score, and/or Achiever practice tests. Learn how to do every type of problem and the concepts they are testing you on. Make any necessary flash cards.
o If you need additional help you could get a ‘Kaplan GRE/GMAT Math Workbook' book or a SAT math book.

* Additional Information
o Crack DAT Math has about ~3 errors per practice test.
o Do not put off studying for this section, it takes practice.
