Picked up FA 2011 a few days ago. Flipping through it page by page now. Not sure if I will be able to catch all the differences, but I'll write down what I do find. I'm looking for major structural differences between the pages. I won't mention irrelevant items like 2011 sometimes moving a picture to a different part of the page. This might be a work in progress. I will edit this post as I go. Parentheses contain equivalent pages in 2011 edition.

Overall:
- FA 2011 corrects some of the 2010 errata
- FA 2011 has darker print and thicker pages
- FA 2011 increases the size of most figures/images (although only slightly)
- FA 2011 removes several images that are difficult to see/interpret

Behavioral Science:
p. 59-60 2010 (57-58 2011) -2011 reorganized a couple items into "Advance directives" and got rid of "Good Samaritan Law."
P. 61-62 (59-60) - 2011 added a couple more example ethical situations. 2011 removed "Piaget's states of cognitive development" and replaced with "Low birth weight"
p. 64 (62-63) - 2011 added a few pictures under "sleep stages" and added one or two more items to the section like "sleep terror disorder"

Biochemistry:
p. 69 2010 (p. 69 2011) - FA 2011 removes "Transition vs. transversion"
p. 75 (75) - 2011 removes "energy requirements of translation"
p. 82 (82) - 2011 removes "Sanger DNA sequencing" renames "Model systems" to "Gene expression modifications"
p. 89 (89) - 2011 removes "Chromosomal inversions"
p. 98 (98) - 2011 removes "Glycolytic enzyme deficiency"
p. 99 (99) - 2011 removes "Cori cycle"
p. 107 (107) - 2011 completely changes diagram of "Catecholamine synthesis." Structures are no longer shown, but more detail of intermediates and cofactors are listed. 2011 removes the figured in "Phenylketonuria" section.

p. 131 (130) - 2011 removed "Diaphragm embryology" and rearranged a bunch of the sections
p. 135 (134) - 2011 added "Descent of testes and ovaries" section

Microbiology:
p. 141 (139) - 2011 added "Vaccines" section
p. 153 (151) - 2011 removed "Enterobacteriaceae" section and added a little more detail to the E. coli table.
p. 154 (152) - 2011 added "Campylobacter jejuni" and "Vibrio cholera" setion. 2011 removed "Treponemal disease" section
p. 155 (153) - 2011 removed "VDRL vs. FTA-ABS" section
p. 158 (157) - 2011 removed "Spores: fungal" and rearranged info to the top of the "Systemic mycoses" section. It looks like they may have added a little more detail here too.

p. 185 (185) - 2011 added "B-lactamase inhibitors." This is the first addition I have found with a new acronym.

p. 191 (191) - As per the above change, it appears that 2011 removed the section "Resistance mechanisms for various antibiotics" and just inserted that info into the respective drug sections
p. 193 (194) - FA 2011 added an entirely new page with "Antiprotozoan therapy" and "Antihelminthic therapy." This is a page of whole new information
p. 197 (197) - 2011 reorganized the "HIV therapy" section

p. 201 (209) - FA 2011 moved "Effects of bacterial toxins"

I'm not going to go through this whole section, but suffice to say that there are a few changes.

Summary: It seems like, content wise, more was removed than added. I would view this as a positive change. FA is not meant to be all-encompassing. Slimming it down a bit keeps it high yield.

THis looks great! Thanx for all the effort you put in!

I am still waiting on my copy to be shipped. B & N taking forever!

I wonder why 2011 got rid of some of the stuf in 2010. some of those things seem almost necessary. Maybe its a good idea to just put all the things taken out from 2010...and annotate in 2011.

any other brilliant ideas out there?

I just noticed that "inner ear" from 2009 and 2010 is missing? Or I think so because I havent been able to find it, I figure hearing and hearing loss would be important?

My first impression is that compared to my 2009 edition there are are HUGE differences. A lot of good changes to the layout that I really appreciate, the pictures are generally "nicer".

P.s. it there are a lot (A LOT) of blank spaces and empty areas in the 2011 version. Which makes sense when you look at Mace1370's list (well done btw). I have just been going through my 2009 and cutting out the things that are missing and gluing them into the spaces where they would have been
ex. I cut out: p. 213-214 (215-217) - 2011 removed "Sites of block in lymphocyte development"
and put it on pg 212 where there is a huge blank spot and then you get an overview before reading the tabell containing the specifics. They fit since it is so obvious they were just spliced out.

This is not making a lot of sense to me, Im starting to feel I would have been better off with the 2010 then waiting for the 2011?

So far it feels that very little has been added, but a decent amount has been removed. I haven't finished going through page by page, however, so it remains to be seen if many of these sections that are removed are actually just relocated to later in the book.

I think it is best to hold of judgment either way until I have finished with the list.

hmm... i wonder if ill be ok just sticking with 2010 then and not even bothering with 2011 after fixing all the errata in 2010..

I remember that there was a thread in the past, where people would post the different additions they made to their FA (from question banks, books, etc) - Whatever happened to that thread? And maybe we should start one for the FA 2011?

Good catch. I had only checked a few errata, and upon noticing that they were corrected made the (poor) assumption that all the errors must have been corrected... because that would make sense.

Turns out they are either incredibly lazy, or somehow missed correcting mistakes they had already identified.

Summary: much of the errata is fixed (but not all). It is well worth your time to go through and check the errata listed above in your copy of FA 2011.

great job! i just got my 2011. but seeing all the things you noted, especially the sections that were deleted kind of concerns me.

should we just consider that those things are no longer considered "high yield" or should we just annotate the things deleted into the 2011 one. i think someone in this post did that. after going through 2011 you think its worth annotating?

I would look at it this way. Consider the most recent version of FA the most high yield source you can find. The newest version of FA doesn't have everything that could be on the test, however. No one book can. Things in older versions of FA are likely to still be fairly high yield, but I would not prioritize them over proven sources like Goljan or UWorld. If you've mastered the major sources you are going to use (ex: FA, Goljan, UWorld) and you find you have more time then I think it would be worth going back and seeing what the previous version of FA had. I doubt the vast majority of people studying for the test have time to do this, though.

I am going through Vitamins and noting some things they added this year compared to last year.

Vitamin A-> Added Used to treat Measles (90)
Vitamin C-> Deficiency:Weakened Immune response (93)
Vitamin D-> Deficiency:Breast milk has decreased Vitamin D (Supplement in dark-skinned patients) (93)
Vitamin E-> Deficiency: Changed neurodysfunction to posterior column and spinocerebellar tract demyelination. (93)

I was just flipping through the Hematology and Oncology sections in both the 2011 and 2010 and even a lot of the wording for the subjects has been changed in 2011. I think I might do the 2011 for the subjects I haven't yet touched and made notes on in the 2010.

If they double check everything in an edition of a book and make sure there are no mistakes how will they justify publishing a new edition next year when there are no changes in exam format or content? errata is unfortunately part of book publishing business. Most of the so called mistakes are intentional.

I've been using FA 2009 this whole time. I have a lotta notes and don't really feel like getting a new First Aid and re-adding notes. You think this is ok?

Yes I'd also like to know too, I have my 09 edition nicely marked and hole punched and i don't want to go really look at the '11 FA unless its really worth it especially since the errata isn't out.

For those of you not buying 2011, I would recommend looking at my list and noting the brand new topics found in 2011 (there aren't that many of them). You can look up info on these topics from other sources and just annotate them into FA 2010.

none of these "changes" will make or break you on the exam, if you have the 2010 no need to buy 2011.

p. 476 (478) - 2011 added "Female reproductive histology"
p. 478 (480) - 2011 removed "Composition of semen"
p. 484 (486) - 2011 added "Kallmann syndrome" and "SRY gene"

Respiratory:
I didn't find any major changes here

Rapid Review:
p. 516 (518) - 2011 added "Athlete with polycythemia", removed "Big toe/extension/fanning upon plantar scrape", added "Bounding pulses, diastolic heart murmur, head bobbing"
I'm not going to go through this whole section, but suffice to say that there are a few changes.

Summary: It seems like, content wise, more was removed than added. I would view this as a positive change. FA is not meant to be all-encompassing. Slimming it down a bit keeps it high yield.
