I have a friend at NOVA who started school this year and he said that the class that most students were having problems with was anatomy. I still have my old anatomy and physiology book and was thinking about starting to look over the anatomy section. For those that are at VCU, is this a good idea?

Gross will keeel you no matter what. 🙂 So sure, look stuff over, but you'll still be memorizing so many words that your choledochal sphinctor won't know what to do with itself!

I think the best way to get through it is to just NOT let yourself get behind.

Sorry, not at VCU, but I imagine gross is similar across the board(s). (get it? 😉)

Thanks for the advice anyway.

would be a waste of time.

call teacher and ask for their powerpoint slides then your on to something.
otherwise dont waste time.

no ppt slides at vcu sorry buddy.

gross was probably one of the easier classes during 1st year.. the hardest i have to say was dental materials and neuroanatomy...

to study for gross keep up with the material, and read, read, and reread, and take practice tests like no other.. the disections are easy they give you plenty of landmarks so you can figure it out. the old questions are very helpful and compare alot to the new ones...

Is McClung still teaching Gross at VCU? I hope for you guys he still is...when I was at VCU he was by far one of the best instructors I had. I assume that Moon is still teaching materials...those were the most painful lectures ever...

McClung is still here and yes, he is still the man. You are also right on target with Moon. Damn those attendance sheets.

gheez!!! My biochem professor was from El Salvador and it seemed like i spent most of my time trying to figure out what she was saying and comprehending little.

just kidding bro.. seriously take it easy on the foreigners thing you might shot around here..

there are few heavy accented professor in the biochem department but you don't have to take that class anymore.

leaving you with mainly phys and most of the professors there are well known nationally especially Dr. Costanzo (she writes the review books for USMLEs)

can any vcu students share with us up-and-coming d1's which are the hardest courses in your first year, and also how you would suggest preparing for them before we get there to maybe ease the blow a little. thank you!

The reason so many people here at Nova had problems with anatomy has absolutely nothing to do with anatomy. It was because the anatomy teacher totally sucks and is one of those guys who enjoys trying to screw students over. He would waste lecture time rambling about nothing, and then pull out every little detail from the book when it came to test time. Plus half the questions on the test were just plain impossible to answer no matter how much you studied and memorized the book. Luckily for many, we had a new teacher for head and neck anatomy that didn't throw many curve balls and people did better in that section of the class. So to sum it up, no you don't need to start studying anatomy before you get to dental school.

Advice from current VCU students is what I am looking for...but thanks though. I am thinking that each school is different.

yeh i would love to hear what they have to say about this as well. Any VCU students out there?

Prepare for school by kicking back some beers, going on vacation, and doing a whole lot of nothing. Everyone will be in the same boat as you next year. You don't want to kill yourself by studying things that you most likely won't need to know. Relax.
