For people applying to advanced programs, there are a few options for intern year:

1) Some programs offer categorical placements where you stay with that program for both your intern year and your advanced training.
2) Some programs have "linked" transitional/prelim years. Your interview for those intern-year programs is often wrapped into your interview day for the advanced program.
3) Some programs offer advanced spots only. In this case, you need to apply separately for transitional/prelim years and interview separately.

In reality, you may end up interviewing at various types of programs. When you enter your rank list on the NRMP website, there will be room for you to add a "supplemental list" for any program that needs one. For example, your #1 may be a categorical (no supplemental list needed), number #2 may be advanced only - you would then add a supplemental list where you rank all of your transitional/prelim programs in your preferred order. When you go through the match, the hope is that you end up with both an transitional/prelim year and an advanced position (or a categorical match). In the case of a partial match (advanced but no prelim or prelim but no advanced spot), you go through SOAP to hopefully fill your open spot.

Hopefully that helped.
