Hey everyone. I'm a DO that applied Ortho this past year and did not match. I did 6 auditions and had 6 interviews and felt I got great feedback throughout the process. I then SOAPed into a TY year and am now looking to dual apply with anesthesia next time around. Since the first time I applied I only got ortho interviews where I auditioned, how would you suggest picking programs to apply to this second time. I'm also wondering if you have any general advice for how to go about my TY year. I've already contacted my PD to do an anesthesia elective and ICU rotation earlier on to get LOR for anesthesia. Should I consider dual applying anesthesia and something else too? I'm worried about not matching a second time

Looking at your post history, there's nothing there about your competitiveness for ortho. COMLEX/USMLE scores, research, etc. Knowing that might help us give you advice. WOuld also help with assessing your chances in Anesthesia. Also, does your new program have an anesthesia residency?

But, it appears you only got interviews from your auditions. That suggests that your application alone isn't generating much interest. A TY year isn't going to count for much in Ortho, you'd certainly be applying for PGY-1 positions again. If you're applying to ortho again, you need to apply to DO friendly programs. The six places that didn't match you are unlikely to match you -- you're not going to be any better of a candidate next year, although the cost of applying to them is low so you might as well try but don't be surprised if they don't interview you at all.

266 Step 2. Top quartile of my class. 3 publications. 3 posters. 3 oral presentations. My TY does not have an anesthesia programs, but I'm able to do an anesthesia elective early to secure LOR.

Well, you're "in the zone" for Ortho. But with only interviews from your auditions, I worry you won't be successful next year. But you're welcome to apply to both anesthesia and ortho and see what happens. I expect you'll get plenty of interest from Anesthesia if you do an elective +/- an ICU rotation and apply strategically.

I'm leaning towards going fully in for anesthesia. How do you suggest I apply strategically?
