Not sure where you got those numbers but the 10m liquid invested is a very rare number and i doubt many are there by 50 yo. Thats the only number that matters when your considering stopping work unless you live in palo alto 20 years and netting 3-5m on your house sale then moving to midwest for a 1m house thats a different story.

Also im getting the sense that 10m is no longer the WOW number it used to be 3-5 years ago partly due to inflation. Recall that 10m in 2020 is around 13m today. I bet people who are closer to the 13-15m range esp liquid are not worried about healthcare and property taxes. Your talking about 1% or less of folks by age 50. I think maybe even less than 5 people on this entire super star site may be in that arena by not all by age 50.
If SDN represents 1% then thats 1% of that number.
Agree 10m especially liquid by 50 is extremely rare. I’m 37 and if we keep saving 300k/yr will be about 9m at 50 in today’s dollars.

great savings rate. Im ignoring inflation when i look at my portfolio through 2030. Ill worry about it after though.

Correct. 8 million net worth was the top 1% just a few years ago.

Now the top 1% is closer to 14 million.

Federal Reserve Survey of Consumer Finances (SCF): The 99th percentile threshold sits at roughly $13.67 million per household (with unadjusted base tables citing a minimum of around $11.64 million”

Thanks for info.

$1 million a year makes the game easier. Not entirely applicable but still good to have that data point.

Medicine even the high earning specialities dont correlate to high liquid NW early bc there is a tsunami of expenses hitting in that critical decade: school loans, mortage payments, 1-2 kids plus time off plus possibly needing to work less to handle all the stress depending on how the kids are i.e. good vs bad sleepers, family/parents needing help or $.

After all that you and your wife need to be on somewhat a similar live below your means thinking which is not always the case. Then you need to actually know what your doing and not chasing single stocks and trying to think your going to outsmart the market. Mistakes are normal here and people will splurge on a car here or lease more than they should or etc. Point is it takes a little bit to get it all down pat.

And you could have done all the above and just happened to be in a lost decade market or sub historical avg market so LUCK is also a huge component which is what aneftp alluded to. Think about this a 10 year of 12% inflation adfjusted cagr of VOO gets you 4.4m if you invest 250k yearly. Thats a bit harder than most people think bc i dont think salaries were as high in 2016-2019 to be doing that and not just in gas.

I am at escape velocity now and I disagree with @aneftp.

My plan is 55 and out- won’t get stuck looking at numbers.

Average age of an American at the time of death is 76.5.

Choose carefully what you do btw 55 & 70.

Had a banger day this past Saturday. Worked hard at one of our biggest tournaments. 280 registered players.

Lost first match for the gold. Came back and won the second match. Then lost the tie breaker and went home with Silver. 😔

It was a great weekend with good friends and good vibes outside work.

Don’t get stuck in the Rat race.

This weekend and the build up to the tournament was priceless.

I’m glad I still have energy to play singles. It’s harder to play 3 sets in the Florida heat. So keep it down to 2 sets.

I don’t get the appeal of pickleball. But different strokes for different strokes.

I feel I get a full workout playing singles. Even doubles tennis doesn’t appeal to me.

When I look at these numbers, I wonder what people do with all their money. I’m 42 and plan on hitting ten mil liquid invested in a few years. And I have a very average job (albeit working spouse)

Do you count home equity and wifes practice in that? Are you doing anything outside of index funds like VOO.

Well done regardless.

lol… maybe. 👴🏼

But I am in the best shape of my life currently. You should really look at the PPA tour and count how many older guys are playing. Zero. You need fast hands, fast reaction time and the ability to move fast, drive, overhead, dink and serve with accuracy and power. It’s also social, it’s happy and I can guarantee you would get your A$$ wiped by any player with a DUPR above 4.5. Women can be deadly in this sport believe it or not. I find that super fun as my wife plays 7 days a week.

@aneftp I was a singles player for most of my life. Baseline banger, took lessons with pro’s and practiced with college teams early in my anesthesia career but my body could not keep up with it. Tennis is dying and pickleball and padel are the new kings. Agassi, Isner, Roddick, Chang, McEnroe…. they are all converts.

Our local club has 29 pickleball courts and 6 tennis courts and my neighborhood has 4 pickleball courts and 2 tennis courts. Anyone with a tennis background has a leg up… also addicting AF so careful if you try it. 🙂

I'm not hating, I've played and it's sort of fun, if not a great test or use of athleticism generally due to the small court.

But it is a sport first and foremost for the elderly 😉

Idk, 10M by age 50 in today's dollars should be acheiveable by most people working a 750k job for that entire time. That's without a working spouse and a reasonable spend. Add in a working spouse and your HHI is topping 1M a year, and you'll be well above 10M with a reasonable spend by age 50 if you start attending work at 30-33 years old.

You should come out and spend an afternoon with me.

It’ll hurt just a little. 🥵😉

“The average age of professional players on the PPA Tour is not officially published as a single metric, but the elite pro tour heavily skews young, with most top competitors in their early-to-mid 20s.
While the general recreational pickleball population has an overall average age of roughly 34.8 years old according to data from the Association of Pickleball Professionals, the competitive professional ranks on the Carvana PPA Tour feature a much younger demographic.”

Live in Texas- I count home equity and wife practice but isn’t that much esp compared to people in CA or east coast
Building a portfolio with 3-5 ETF’s is easily done, requires no management and is mindless. The last 15 years you can make an argument for VOO/VGT 2 etf portfolio and came out way ahead of any managed retirement/ brokerage accounts.

I won’t deny that there’s levels of pickleball prowess. What I will deny is that it’s a great test of overall athleticism. Same way I’d say high level ping pong isn’t a great test. They’re both fine games of skill that don’t require particular power, speed, or endurance. Court is too small, the ball doesn’t travel fast enough, and there’s no strength required.

The best player in the world was fifth in the nation after picking it up a few months prior at age 17. Not saying it isn’t difficult to master, but I doubt you’ll find many pro athletes from any other sport with similar stories.

And that’s all ok. But you don’t need to be Deion sanders to utterly dominate older people in pickelball if you’re 95th percentile athletically

10 million net worth in 2026 dollars in 17-20 years will likely be 15-20 million.

It’s a moving target with inflation.

So can someone get to 20 million as a new grad today by age 50 in 2046?

It’s like when I got out my goal was 5 million. That was 22 years ago. The top 1% was 6 million in 2004.

You are constantly chasing a number

Also factor in debt/housing. The average medical student debt 25 years ago was less than 90k. It’s 230k in 2026

The average sales home price in 2004 vs 2026 is almost doubled. 275k in 2004 vs 504k in 2026

Definitely not what the data shows. Achievable? Sure. Reality? No. How many people do you know who have had a 750k income (>90th percentile) for 20 years? I know zero.

All good man. You just don’t know what you’re talking about. I don’t think you get it or haven’t seen a real competitive match live. Sure you have the old and the newbies getting into it, but once you cross 4.0 you’re drilling with a partner twice a week, going to tournaments, leagues, just to stay relevant. It’s a grind and a fun one at that. I put in 20-25 hrs/week. In tennis you have 3 times the space to respond to a drive. Think about being 15-20 feet apart from your opponent and responding to a 45 mph drive. Big difference in reaction time and skill to effectively counter that.

At what level are you playing ?

4.0-4.5 and drill/practice with some of the Reno Pickleball team members. They just came back from Santa Fe last week and did really well. Super fun to watch those guys play.

The 10m liquid nw is one tough final BOSS to get to. Im saying this in 2026 when that 10m is still a king number. That number will likely drift up with inflation. Good luck to all newbies who believe they will get there.

We know it’s a sport. Just that we see over the hill professional tennis players instantly crack into the top 20 like jack sock or the Canadian eugenie B.

I don’t see any top pickel ball players crack the top 200 in women’s or men’s tennis even if they wanted to.

I get the popularity of the sport. I never heard of it till I moved to Florida in 2007/8. I saw old people playing it.

Do u play singles or doubles pickelball?

I’ve backed off quite a bit but dupr is 4.9. Love to play sometime if our paths cross.

That is one hell of an accomplishment. Congrats dude. I hope to get there some day. 👍🏽

There are some nice spots around Tahoe we could spend an afternoon with some of my picklehead friends if you are ever around.

Do u play singles or doubles pickelball?

Mixed doubles and Men’s doubles mostly.

I drill with a few friends and we do some singles games, but mainly doubles which I never did playing Tennis.

Doubles is definitely more interactive.

I don’t know many people who have practiced that long, but I don’t expect my compensation to go down substantially in today’s money. Remember that 7ish years ago 750 was more like 550ish. I’ve been well above 750 for 3 years running and that’s after a few years of something above median.

Unless I dial back there’s little reason to believe I dip well below that at any point but that’s Just my experience.

There’s nothing to get here.

A 17 year old reached the pinnacle of the sport after playing for 3 months. It’s not like he’s some hyper talented specimen of an athlete either.

Watching a world final match at a glance, and I’m not really seeing much here. Maybe some lateral quicks but nothing ankle shattering. Certainly not the arm snap of elite tennis players.

I’ve competed against several Olympic champions and know dozens and dozens of other olympians in many sports. I very much know how to spot wheat from chaff athletically.

Pickleball “athletes” just ain’t all that. Sorry to put you out.

Whatever you say champ.

I said it’s fine. But the low barrier to entry is precisely because the fundamentals are relatively easy and the court is small.

Watching a World Cup match and it’s thoroughly fine, but nothing impressive.

If you can explain how it’s possible that 3 months is enough to become world class at this sport then I’ll sit quietly and listen.

I really don’t care what you say. You keep making ignorant statements. Now the most popular sport on the planet isn’t good enough? Seriously man… go kick rocks someplace else. What are you trying to accomplish?

Good enough for what? I said what: A test of athleticism.

Anyone can play, and that’s a good thing. But you won’t find the next LeBron James or Cristiano Ronaldo talent athlete playing it professionally.

I have fun playing it, but it’s far less challenging cardiovascularly or explosively than something like racquetball or basketball is, and on par with skill required.

Do you still make army money or pp money?
PP now and for the last year. We'll prolly be +net worth by 2028. *fingers crossed* I want to contribute heavily to our kids education and future so I've got 529's that will get 1k/month and I'd like to start a taxable brokerage for them too with the same amount. If I can't retire early, at least my kids might be able to.

Pickleball is very easy to be good at, especially if you have a rackets background. It’s also extremely difficult to master unless you’ve dedicated yourself to the game for years. Hard to describe. Of course, you’ll likely slide in a jab. Whatever. There’s reason the best players, ALW and Ben Johns, have each been playing only pickle for about a decade (and pro level for > 5 years).

I’d love it. I’ll let you know.

Singles is a serious, serious workout. Moreso than tennis IMO. Skinny singles is great fun, and certainly helps develop skills applicable to doubles play.

$10M is obviously plenty but not quite truly “rich.” this only bothers me for two things:

1) Private jet travel would be amazing
2) I wish I could own a place at Yellowstone club (or something similar with private powder on decent terrain)

I think private jet travel is more cramped and less luxurious than people think. I’d think overseas private jet would be intolerable compared to first class long haul

Agree but if you get there mid to late 40s bc of high income/high savings/investing and a lucky great market run you have a shot to be. By early 50s NYC Gas could be 20m and near 40m sub 60. Of course at 20m you could justify some low level of netjets travel.

Really depends on the market. A recession with a 5-7 year recovery is a significant factor to consider. Those who came out in 2006-2010 have been riding one of the biggest stock market waves in decades. Those who doubled down during covid made out like bandits.
Anyone who’s made it big will tell you a bit of luck was part of the formula.

Private jet seems very convenient from a logistics perspective (not having to deal with regular airport BS) but flying business/first on Emirates seems like a fantastic way to travel.

Probably getting out 2008 and later was the safer timeframe. Not enough money yet to invest in stock market that was on verge of imploding.

Known 4 anesthesiologists personally gotten burn by the housing crash by buying their first homes even as late as 2008 in Florida with a still declining market. It was like catching a falling knife.

2 of the the banks actually went after them for deficiency judgments. Almost unheard of. But it was just bad luck. While millions walked away. Florida is known as a recourse state and a deficiency judgment can be renewed for 20 years

Imagine buying your first home in 2007 for 700k (reasonable amount for a new anesthesia grad making 300k plus in first job)

Home worth 300k less (I’m not kidding) by 2010. A newer grad with a growing family.

Bank won’t approve short sale. Bankruptcy not an option. Stuck with 300k debt. New job doesn’t work out by 2010 cause not made a partner. So due to non competes. You gotta leave the area. Plus you got twins and another kid. All under the age of 3. A part time working wife

Crap just happens that can set you back

Finally settle the debt for 150k. That’s still a crap load of money to pay for a home you don’t even live in anymore.

Agree on doubling down during COVID. Some of my friends pulled out April 2020 of the stock market. I leaned my lessons from 2008 (I didn’t pull out money) but I didn’t put new money into the market in equities for almost 3 plus years. Lost a lot of potential gains.

Valid point. I am picturing a big jet with direct travel between closest airport and any other airport in the world. 1% of the 1% level stuff.

Had a friend that graduated a few years ahead of me go through this exactly. Bought a big house in the NE and then had to sell it brick by brick. By the time I graduated I was able to start investing at the bottom- which at the time didn’t feel like it because it was still volatile for some time.
