The guys in the dental forum look like they are flipping out over this, but to me it only seems relevant for people who are deciding if dentistry is for them.

There are a couple of apparently effective anti-carries drugs coming out.

This is a Time article link posted over there that discusses one of them:
http://newsfeed.time.com/2012/07/15/...g-of-the-past/

The drug is 14 months from coming out at a bare minimum.

They are also losing their collective s**t over the new dental therapists, but I'm sure you've heard about that to death.

I suspect you like less competition?

Now that we may have the magic bullet for caries, perhaps we can move on to a better Roach Motel or a better mousetrap.

LOL.
Ant traps would be great too. My house was flooded with ants today, and I literally tried to push some ants into a useless ant trap I bought today. They easily bypassed it by any means necessary.

Lol, there is some medical miracle every 3 months. How many times I've heard cancer was cured with a super cheap drug, or a HIV vaccine.

Think about the money needed to research a drug with the intention of commercialization. They're going to say "this is a $x billion market" to get the money from investors. They won't undercut the market. And there will be competitors. Maybe dentists will distribute the magic bullet. The market will balance itself out. If people aren't going to pay for cavities anymore, the prices of hygiene and more complex procedures will naturally increase to recoup the losses.

All in all, these articles are designed and written to get ad money. It's terrible how Internet articles have transformed into needing misleading titles and extremely controverisal topics that promote spread rather than quality journalism.

Edit: I'd say journalism is the career that needs to worry.
