I was talking to a friend about Ortho Surgery, and he said he talked to a surgeon who was describing different procedures (ACL repairs, rotator cuffs).

Is it true that a lot of creativity is required in orthopaedic surgery? The surgeon said they would sometimes go to operate, and not have a complete idea of what they needed to do. They would have to be creative and that there was no true "standard procedure" for Ortho. Is this true?

All surgical specialties will have times when the surgeon has to use good judgment and surgical principles to solve a problem that was not anticipated. Areas in Orthopedics where things like this (probably) commonly occur would be the Tumor guys who do a lot of reconstructive work. Joints guys do almost everything in a very regimented manner (with the exception of redos and periprosthetic fractures).

Lots of creativity and problem solving required for trauma.

a common myth is that ortho residents spend all their free time working out, banging hot chicks/dudes, and eating subway. but the truth is that a lot of us prefer firehouse

Quiznos myself...the closest firehouse is 60+ miles away.
