WHO'S GOING TO BE IN THE 2004-2005 IMS PROGRAM?

I'm really excited about this program!
So who is going to be my classmate?

And got some questions for those of you who are going...

-living on or off campus?

-if on campus, what are you doing for August? and why the heck are those dorms not open in august?

-if off campus, what parts of town are nice and which are...not so nice 😀

-do you guys know if IMS students are allowed to sneak over to the med campus and actually sit in on the lectures? (I don't think I'll like this telecasting crap. granted i wouldn't feel so bad if I dozed off, but do IMS students get a chance to talk to the professors?)

-anyone in philly...what bank is the best to go with in the area? PNC? Do they have student accounts?

-one last one...do they encourage volunteer work while you're in the IMS program? I'd like to volunteer at Hahnemann while I'm there.

alright....I'll quit now before I scare all you other IMS'ers away with all my questions...heh heh

PNC Bank is terrible, go with Bank of America but if you need a lot of MAC accessibility go with Citizen Bank. HUH does have ATM machines in the hospital but their customer serivce is horrendous.

Also living in Philadelphia is the worst. I'm glad to be leaving soon, just pray that you get into a better medical school than Drexel. The student support is awful at drexel once you get in and with the loss of MCP-Hostpital, students will have to travel even further to complete many clinical rotations.

Good luck and say hello to Dr. Conover (Biochem). He's the best. BTW IMS is an okay program I wish I would have done it but the medical school is not the best in the area. Actually it's probably the worst medical school in the state of PA.

No you can't "sneak" over to the med campus and watch lectures over there. They will vehemently drive this point into your heads early on...or at least they did this past year. You're not a med student, you're an IMS student - you pay half the tuition they do and believe me it shows.
Also, get the illusion of a "campus" out of your head. It doesn't exist. it's one wing of a dilapidated building and a dorm which was closed all last year because it was falling apart at the seams.
Anyway, it's good that you're excited about the program - you have to be to do well and put up with all the BS. Sorry if this is discouraging, but I'm just telling you how it is...

How much do IMS students pay? I'm glad I adviced my friend to do G'town SMP now that I'm aware IMS students get treated with hardly any respect. :scared:

I didn't think there were Bank of America's in Philly at all 😕 . I have an account at BOA from undergrad but thought I'd have to change because they didn't have any branches or even ATMs listed at their website. Maybe I'll look into Citizen's.

Don't change your Bank of America account just yet!! there are Fleet branches in Philly! and soon they will all be Bank of America's!

Now all the people who didn't think IMS was so great.. where were you guys before??? No one said anything negative on the other IMS threads!

I'm looking to live off campus because if you take the dormitory rate it comes out to be about $800/month... i'd rather be able to choose whom i'm living with and what kind of conditions.

Sorry I'm new here. I think IMS is okay. I just think the Drexel Medical School is terrible, and would advise people to look else where if they want a good learning experience. Dean Samuel Parrish is one of the worst Deans I have ever met. And I met many when I interviewed all over the U.S.

Dean Samuel Parrish when talking about our student body once told me, "many students here are walking around like they're half-erect." And when I asked for help with residency programs he told me, "you never know what Programs want, sometimes they take their residents based on how big your cock is." This guy is an ignorant ***** and when he speaks nobody listens. He also wears an earring to work just to let you know what a big flamer he is. I would have never attended Drexel Med had I met him while I interviewed.

As I've mentioned in other threads, IMS itself - meaning strictly the academic program - is good...and if you work hard, it will get you into med school. It is the administration of the program that sucks. The purpose of my statements in previous posts to clear up any false notions of the school being like a college. There is no campus to speak of and you have to work in crappy labs, are stuck in a lecture hall where maybe 30% of the lights work, are constantly not receiving important class materials on time, small group instruction sessions are usually very disorganized (especially in neuro), often the room where you're supposed to have a small group review or lab or whatever will be occupied by students from some other program and you (and the instructor) have to spend 10-15 minutes trying to find an available room - either that or the instructor will show up 20 minutes late, transcripts got majorly screwed up this past year as did letters of Recommendation...the list goes on and on.
The point is is there's a lot of minor frustrations that you have to deal with, but in the end, you get the opportunity to do what you have to do...and that is prove that you can perform in a med school curriculum.

Captain,
Do you know of any fitness clubs that are in center city near where IMS is held? I'm asking because from the sound of things, there probably isn't much of a gym for students.
Also, do you know how many people in the program reapplied while in the program? And if so, do you know if they were relatively successful? Does the administration discourage/encourage one to apply while in the program?

There is a gym at a local hotel that you have access to...it sucks, but suffices - once the semseter gets going your workout time will be limited.
I have no idea how many people reapplied during the first year of IMS. I'll guess...maybe 70...
Some people were successful, others weren't. Again, I don't have numbers to give you. A lot of D.O. schools offered acceptances to IMS grads. In general, the students that did the MSP/IMS (MSP one year, IMS in their second year) did a lot better. The admin will neither encourage nor discourage. If you're undergrad grades are really poor and you start out the first semester not doing well, Soslau may tell you to stick around for the second year (but only if you approach him asking for advice). Other than that, they let you figure it out on your own.
Learn from my mistake...keep Soslau apprised as to where you are in the app process. His advice will keep you from screwing up the app process...like I did. I'll reiterate though that he won't seek you out...you have to take the initiative to meet with him to get his advice - and be forewarned - he can be brutally honest to the point of being extremely condescending (just wait until you get to hear some of his comments during your Medicine and Society class).

I used to belong to the Bally's at 16th and Walnut. Then I started using U.Penn's facilities which are awesome. I'm not so psyched about the tiny gym in a hotel. I may just join this gym across the street from me in Northern Liberties called 'Ironworks II'. There's also the Rittenhouse Gym and the 12th street gym all closeby.

I liked the IMS program and would recommend it to anyone who feels that their undergraduate grades were not indicitive of their ability to perform in medical school. I was there to go to school and it didn't bother me if a class schedule changed or a room assignment was not posted because my life revolved around school; I had nothing else to do. I often stayed late with professors and one professor in particular (Dr. Alteveer) was sometimes there until 11:00pm to answer questions before exams. I advise you to take this same philosophy and the little things won't bother you.

It is challenging and you really have to put in the work. But so many people have been accepted to medical schools all over the country, it seems like it really works.

Good luck!

Anyone attending IMS in need of a roommate? It dawned on me it would be very beneficial to live with someone who was also in the program to help promote study sessions and commiseration. I'm open to someone who currently has a spare room to rent or if you want to look for an apartment together.

Does anyone know if I can contact an advisor (or somebody) at Drexel to get objective advice about whether this program is the best option for me?

The underlined 'objective' is directed towards Drexel, not towards the very informative posts!

I guess you can talk to Soslau...I'm not really sure how objective he's going to be. I think that if for whatever reason IMS is definitely not right for you he'd tell you. The only reason I don't trust the other administrators of the program is because I know of several people that were in IMS that really shouldn't have been - they had good undergrad grades, but low MCATs. They should've been in MSP, not IMS. I'm not sure who they contacted for advice in regards to which program to enroll in, but somehow they got stuck in the wrong place.

How did you find out about acceptance? Is it true they call you up first? I'm on hold-1 status, and am not sure when that will change and what my chances might be

I remember talking to several people last year who got in to the program the week it started. It would help to call.

What excatly is a hold 1 status? I am still waiting for the reply, my app was complete at least a month ago and I have not heard from them at all...is this common? Do I still have any chances of gaining admission?

Chris, the admissions counselor, described it as the highest "hold" status. There's hold-1, 2, and 3. Apparently, after hold-1 you can be admitted or waitlisted. He said all of the hold candidates were to be reviewed on or after July 9, which was the application deadline. That sounds a little too complicated for a postbac program :meanie:

If anyone has any questions about the area or program drop me a PM...Also I have a few things for sale (ims books, bed, etc..) let me know.
