I hear this question alot. fonzy asks:

"An applicant gets into MSTP; does MD part for two yrs then decides to just finish MD and do Phd later [maybe during residency] or just discontinue MSTP. But MSTP has already paid for two yrs. What happens in such situations?"

My short response:

While this scenario is feared and frowned upon by program directors, MSTPs are not permitted by the NIH to ask for their money back if you drop the program and return to medical school. Of course you will still owe the normal tuition for the remaining years of medical school. Beware of MD/PhD programs that are not MSTPs, as they usually will want the medical school tuition back. This may or may not be legally enforceable, but it's a good reason to think about choosing a MSTP over a MD/PhD program. Who knows where life will take you?
