Who's Applying to Endo this year?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats from me too.

First interview of the season. That's great!

Just sealed application #40 in the envelope. Isn't that a great feeling to know that they're all sent?! Now I just hope that they all get received and processed properly. I spoke to a school today that didn't receive my CV or personal statement. I could have sworn they were in the same envelope as the check, application and photo (all received), but I must have not put them in or something. Oh well, now to just wait, confirm, and wait some more. Best of luck again to everyone applying this year!

My Penn application didn't get sent until last week. Hopefully there will still be an interview slot for me...Good luck at the interview Endoking.

Congrats endoking! Good luck on your interview. 🙂

Good luck on your interview, endoking. Put in a good word for all of us 😛 Let us know about the program. It's interesting. I wonder if other programs are calling for interviews before their PASS application/program deadlines comes up? Any thoughts?

I know one program starts offering acceptances 10/1, while the program deadline is 12/1. Go figure. We should try to really keep track of who hears what from where when. I've looked at the past interview threads, but it's tough to get real timing from it. I guess we'll all find out soon enough...

Hey guys, I got another interview invite today from Tufts in Boston. They start interviewing on Sept 11th and finish Oct 1. Penn starts interviewing on Sept 24th and finishes on Oct 1, so there's plenty of time for you all to get invites. My interviews are both toward the end of Sept, so I've got a while still.

I wondered about this, too. Maybe they automatically invite everyone that meets certain criteria, so they don't mind calling people before the deadline. It must be something like that--from what I've read here on SDN I have a hard time believing my app profile is any more impressive than most of the others they have received.

endoking, you must be on cloud nine! I know I would be. My first four program deadlines past yesterday and one more is tomorrow. I am on pins and needles. Did notification come via email or phone?

Where is itsgavinc with the endo interview thread 2007?

By phone. Good question, they should be putting some stickies up soon for the official interview thread so we can keep better track

I'm hoping to hear from someone... anyone soon. The suspense is making me ... ist2_1138491_need_to_pee.jpg

BTW, for any of you guys who are interested in what the private practice endo guys are doing, go onto the endodontics section of dentaltown.com, if you haven't already done so. There are some amazing case documentations with fantastic results. Makes me wants to be the best possible endo resident/endodontist.

Jamster, Carlos Boveda matches the best of any endodontist I have ever seen. Only difference is dentaltown is like studentdoctor. so the endo section is full of posts on how to do things along with others giving critiques on posted cases. It's very insightful. Best of luck.

Hello from out west. I'm impressed with the number of RCT experiences in dental school that some of you have had. Are you referred pts specifically for RCT or are y'all just heavy handed on the bur? We unfortunately have a post-grad dept that takes our apicos and re-txs... on the bright side all the teeth I've done I've used rotary and cont. wave obturation.
Good luck with the Tufts interview, I have a buddy who's an R-1 out there.

Our dental school was much like yours. A lot of the endo grads took "moderately difficult cases" from the predocs. But I was still able to to several molars in school. I made sure the right professor was there to allow us to do things 😀 But most of the endo I've done were in my GPR. If you want as much experience as possible while in a GPR, ask your fellow coresidents to give you all the molar endo. That's what I did midway through the year. But I wish I had the bicuspids too, as I'm seeing 2-4 canaled premolars in private practice and I have very little experience!!!! Anyways best of luck to all

Nice avatar 2thmaker, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. The guy you took it from is truly a master.

If possible, let's make sure we keep close track of who we hear from, when and how they contact us, when(approximately if you don't want to give exact dates)your interview is, and dates that offers are made. We really need to establish a good resource for the folks applying in years to come.

Traditionally, UMKC is one of the first to interview, in late August/early September. Anyone heard from them yet?

Good idea, we should start a new thread dedicated to just interview info. I applied to UMKC but haven't heard anything from them.

It's settled then endoking. Since you are the first to get an interview, you should start an Official Endo interview thread 2007.

I think the following information should be included:

School:
Date of Invitation:
Mode of Invitation:
Date of Interview:
Date of Offer:

If we can keep the discussion to a minimum on that thread we'll have a nice neat log of the interview season for the applicants in years to come. Hopefully I'll be able to post on that thread soon, unfortunately, no interviews yet...😕

Done. I changed the date of interview line to dates offered for interviews so people can see a range of dates that the schools will be interviewing. Good luck, tomorrow's another day

Hey dlux. He really is a master of the trade. He could be a bit more polished with his responses; but hey I respect people who aren't fake. PS. image google "no bullsh*t" and you come up with the same image 😀

I'll have to try to find that pic online, I dig it, maybe I'll use it as my desktop background. The guy is certainly not out to make friends, but after seeing the retreats he has to clean up everyday, I'd be pretty po'd as well.

He doesn't aspire to mediocrity, and he and I share that sentiment. I'd guess that you do as well, otherwise you wouldn't be willing to spend another couple of years becoming the best that you can.

Good luck to everyone out there applying!

The suspense is killing me!!!

A lot of program deadlines are 9/1, hopefully after Labor Day we will all hear from more programs. A bunch of deadlines have already passed(UW, OHSU, OSU, VCU) and no word yet!

Just spoke to someone at VCU, and was told that they are going to be making interview calls at the end of September? I was confused, since their due date was 8/15, but the woman answering the phone was certain. I don' t know what can take six weeks to sort out...

Yeah dlux, that sounds a bit stupid, maybe they take their time in sorting things out????

I guess so. I think UIC is interviewing 10/8 and 10/9 and their deadline was 8/15 also. Maybe some programs review apps on a rolling basis, while others wait to have all of them together or have to do it as a committee. Strange for sure.

No word out there from Ohio State yet(due date 8/17)?

Patience may be a virtue, but right now, I'm about out of it!

yeah i know man be patient, i aint heard nada from nowhere yet, kinda gettin a bit concerned this end though. Obviously these programs will shoot at the chance for guys who have great stats first. Hopefully after all that they can look at mine 🙂

So far, I've decided that there is no set pattern. Every school seems to do their own thing. I also think it is strange that some schools offer interviews before their deadlines and others wait for 6 weeks. Here's my guess at the late interview notification:

Most of these programs are interviewing 10-15 people from the same pool of 20 applicants with really strong stats. That means that just about all of those 20 people are going to go to the first 8 or 10 schools. If all 52 programs offer interviews to the same 20 people (over-simplification I know), they are eventually going to have a lot of cancellations and they will have to start all over with their interview invitations. So, if they wait until October, they will probably avoid losing all of their interview pool to other offers prior to their interview.

Just a thought. Best of luck to everyone. Keep up the hope, there are still a LOT of schools that haven't offered interviews yet.

EDL, that certainly makes sense. I also agree that it's WAY too early to hit the panic button. As long as we keep good records of who we hear from and when, hopefully folks won't have to go through this uncertainty every year.

BTW, don't you want to cancel your interviews at KC and Baylor? I think you'll be too busy to go to all of them...😀😀

I think this is just about right--its good that we are getting some of the same interviews so that when the acceptances start coming down the pipe, the other's chances are that much better.

I know they encourage early applications, but I haven't ever heard of interviews before the application deadline.

UCSF's deadline is Oct 1, but their interview date is Sept 10.

Everyone acknowledges that they are applying & you all speak of your stats, yet you won't disclose the programs in which you applied too?

Why not tell us which programs YOU are applying to first?

I applied to 15 schools. They are:

UCLA, UCSF, VA Long Beach, USC, Loma Linda, Indiana, Iowa, Nova, UT Houston, Baylor, NYU, U Penn, North Carolina, Ohio State, and St. Louis.

I turned my apps in pretty late, so a lot of them are not complete... at least that's what I say to myself since I haven't gotten a lot of calls! 😀

As for my stats:

5 yrs as a GP
Board scores 93/84
School was P/F... if it wasn't, I'd be ranked in the bottom 50th percentile. I'm just glad the Dean doesn't remember me, or the Dean's letter would be BAD.
Clinical instructor at a dental school 3 months
Volunteer at free dental clinic for 8 months
Letters of rec nothing to write home about

It's pretty hard to tell if you're going to be competitive. When I look at my credentials, it's not all that impressive. Heck, a lot of you guys still in dental school have better stats than I do. I thought best case scenario I would get 2-3 interviews. I already have 2 interviews now, and hope to get more as the apps become complete. Good luck to everyone in this very nerve-racking process. Can't wait to get the whole thing over with!

What criteria are you guys going to use to decide which offer to accept, assuming you get multiple offers? Quality of program, length, financial considerations, and quality of life outside the program are all important factors. My wife wants me to go for the shortest and cheapest program. But the way I see it, I plan on doing this for 20+ years, so if it takes a little longer and costs more, but I'm a better clinician, then I'd rather do it the right way. It'll be VERY tough to make an early decision on a program if you've got more interviews lined up to schools with stronger programs.

Elipar,

I think that your stats are great. That is very nice for you that your rank is "undeterminable." I think you've got a very good shot this year. Personally, I was a little too paranoid to only apply to 15 programs. It has been working so far...

I think that my ultimate criteria is going to be: "Am I okay spending my next 2 years at this program?" If I see a lot of personal red flags at an interview, then I would feel comfortable passing on the offer, but if not, I think I'll probably accept if given the opportunity. Since I started getting interviews I've spoken to a lot of endodontists about their experience at school. My outlook on one school, in particular, was not very positive because they were expensive, had lots of residents, and weren't known to be one of the "top tier" programs. Then I spoke to a guy who trained there and he loved it because it was more laid back than other places and different parts of what he said sounded good to me. I think I'm just going to go and interview with an open mind and see what appeals to me. No matter how much research I have done, I don't think anything can replace "the feeling" you get when you are there talking to the residents.

Anyway...Good luck guys. (Lots of deadlines were today)

My wife's the same way--I only applied to programs of 24-27 months, so that's not a consideration any more. I do have four kids though, so I will probably choose a KC or San Antonio over a Detroit or Boston school if given the option.

EDL, at one point I was considering applying to EVERY school. Afterall, I REALLY want to get in THIS year, so the shotgun method would be the best. After I started to fill out some apps, I realized that it was a pain in the ass, especially since most schools did not make their pdf applications with boxes to type in! My REAL goal is to get into a West Coast school though. Unfortunately, I didn't apply to Oregon or Washington, even though I think I would have enjoyed living in those two states. I didn't have the balls to apply to just 5 schools, so I stuck in some "filler" schools. I'm terrified of flying, so I hope to God I don't have to go to any of those schools for interviews.

I have a friend who was on the admissions committee at UCLA a couple years ago. There were 6 evaluators who each took 60 applications. Thus the total applications were about 360. From each pile of 60, the evaluator was allowed to pick 3 to interview. Thus the number of interviewees was 6x3=18. He is not on admissions anymore (DAMN!!!), so he said it might or might not be the same today.

Quick note on UCLA, talked with a part-time faculty there and she said as of 9/7/07 the adcom had not even looked at the apps yet, so there is still hope

That's good to hear...especially for the west-coast only crew.

I heard they used to make you do a root canal on an extracted tooth as part of the interview there. Not sure if they still do, but I thought that was a little weird.

Someone I met at an interview told me they were planning on interviewing on Sept 28, but no invites yet. I can't verify if that's true or not.
