1) Do programs find out they unmatched first or do applicants find out first? I understand students find out on noon, March 16th.

2) How do positions get filled in 1/2 hour (I know they may contact unmatched people they interviewed during the season or PDs may talk to Deans and recruit that way, but that can't be true for all the programs)? I mean Interviews are only by phone and decisions are made on the spot over the phone?

I haven't read any scramble violations made by any institution on the NRMP website, but it seems this is the one place violations are likely to be high.

3) Is there anyone out there reading that has Scrambled into a position in that 1/2 hour?

4) After a program has read a Fax/emailed/Eras application and says hey this candidate looks good... what is the most important thing they are looking to know over the phone?

lots of questions, thanks for reading.

Applicants find out on Monday, Programs find out on Tuesday @ 11:30 AM, the scramble starts at 12.

Positions don't necessarily get filled in 1/2 hour. The scramble starts at 12 noon, so from 11:30 to 12 noon programs can "get ready" for the onslaught. Programs start interviewing applicants at 12 noon. Per the NRMP, more than half the spots are filled by 4PM.

Can't answer this

Basically trying to figure out why you didn't get a spot in the match. Sometimes it's obvious -- someone trying for rads or derm and not getting a spot. Sometimes it's not.

Thank you aProgDirector, this will help in preparing. I will have the answer to why I didn't match ready, if that turns out to be the case.

What about for those who successfully match, who finds out the specific match results first? I know classmates in the early match (Urology and Ophthalmology in particular) that had contact from their programs the night before their Match Day. Does this happen for the regular match too?

Just out of curiosity, is this format new to this year's match? In the previous years, didn't programs and applicants find out the match results on the same day/time?

Just curious, and to be well prepared.... Is there something we should have prepared in case we have to scramble? For example, like our ERAS application, specialty grades, USMLE/COMLEX transcripts, etc. Like an emergency crap-I-have-to-scramble packet?
I don't think I have to worry, but at the same time ya never know. I'm sure a lot of people feel this way and would want to know what we should have ready ahead of time in case we need to use it. thanks ! 🙂

Programs actually find out one day earlier whom they have matched. I have never understood the need for this. We are expressly forbidden to reveal that information to anyone.

Nope, same.

I had a lot of friends that found out the night before during the early match as well. I wonder if those program directors were also give the same "forbidden" guidelines.

Could programs be finding out even earlier than next week?

I'm doing a radiology rotation at a hospital that hosts students from a bunch of different medical schools. One of the students from one of the many schools *swears* he was just emailed today by his top choice program, "welcoming him to his new home".

Bullsh*t, or possible?

Not sure why a program would violate match rules (and risk its consequences) by prematurely contacting an applicant after RoL deadline(even if they knew that he was matching there, which they do not). They would have nothing to gain from that move, other than perhaps being charming and cute? So, yeah, I smell some strong bull***t at work here.

I think it's probably bs. Programs don't even know if they filled until 11:30 on Tuesday.

...eh. I figured. The kid is nice enough, and always has gum to share, but lays it on a little thick.

Good luck to all waiting to find out where we get to go!

May have been answered previously, but do PDs have access to the match outcome/program for those applicants who did not match at his/her own program?

He could of emailed the PD saying that he is ranking their program #1. The PD could have emailed him back and said we ranked you in our top 3 (we have 3 spots), and thus welcome.

So I guess it could happen..although it seems a bit early for that.

Yes, we do. We get our rank list back with everyone's match on it. We don't know where we were on your rank list (although obviously if you were above our "last match" and matched elsewhere, that program was listed above ours).

Thanks aPD. One of my interviewers mentioned this today so I was curious.

huh...well, I stand corrected! Thanks for the info!

If an applicant applies for residency spot and program does not choose to rank that person for what ever reason or rank at the bottom. Does this has any bearing on that person's fellowship application at that institution? Does IM divisions have access to or inquire about residency application of that person at the same hospital?

No. The fellowship and residency offices are usually separate, your application will have changed with further training, and ERAS is a different program every year. No one will go back and look at your residency app unless you bring it up in discussion, and even then it's unlikely.

But it's not available till about a week after match day.
