I shoulda followed my heart 4 years ago am now consdering leaving MD/Phd. program to become a DPM. Somebody ever done this? Friends are all DPM's, was pressured to do MD/Phd becos dad was CMO in hospital. Ha s anyone else been in the same boat.

Well, since it seems like you are typing with your feet, I say go for it.

seriously gstrub I keep telling people this but they think I'm burned out with the MD/PHD work. But it's not that I just enjoy podiatric medicine. Before I got in to my program I worked at a DPM's office. Have you ever been around those guys? What year are you? How far into your program are you?

just drop the PhD and go into an ortho residency..depending on what year in med school you are, this could actually be a quicker route (and you would have a much wider scope of practice..)

ya, I'd just drop the phd and go for the M.D. you can then go into orthopedics and pretty much focus on the foot and ankle of you choose.

premeds stay off of this thread and i insist i do not need advice from premeds who have only a limited knowlege of medicine or podiatric medicine for that matter. you guys don't understand it's not about scope of practice it's about philosophy and passion -- you ain't seen nothing yet and the grass is not always greener on the other side. a DPM saved my best friend while an ortho did otherwise. I

Philosophy and passion are overrated. Stick with your program. You can always adopt whatever philosophy you want in life, and your passion WILL change with time. Don't drop out and regret it later. You have something good going for you, don't waste it!

My advice (I'm an MD/PhD): drop the PhD, wrap up the MD, go into something related to connective tissue like PM&R, rheumatology, sports medicine, anesthesia/pain medicine or orthopedic surgery. Your options with an MD vs DPM are SO much greater, in terms of job security, salary, demand for services, and opportunities to specialize and subspecialize, and - who knows - you may just fall in love with something completely different during your MS3/4 rotations.

Perhaps the funniest thing I've read all week. The thread should have ended after post #2.

Whoa, you're (A) a liar and (B) off the reservation.

I am willing to bet that most pre-meds have way more common sense than you right about now. Bloody troll.

^I know, right?

Yeah, cause, God forbid he might want advice from both sides. I don't see any inflammatory statements in either of his post...

Besides, do you really think and of the pods students really care enough to, "Come over here and start a war," on the allopathics, or vice-versa?

Yeah, me neither.

Seriously, dude?

Go have a glass of red wine, call your mom, and calm down.

My post was merely a guess at determining why the guy was banned. Did I even say the Podi's or the Allo's would actually entertain an e-war? I was answering the question that Re3 posed. 🙄
