opinions on affirmative action.
Let me clarify, select the second one if you are against affirmative action but you don't mind if they select people because they offer a diverse background.
So if I'm against AA, but look forward to maybe boning a black chick in med school, I select option two?

what a poorly designed poll.
why not
1. for AA
2. Against AA
3. Believe in the need for Diversity, but don't believe in AA.
make the polls clear and learn from your mistakes. your plentiful and very common mistakes.
nah im just being a dick, but still, you should make them clear... also, wont the monitors get rid of polls like these? dont they hate the URM topic?
Actually, I am very interested in this poll. I think like most other things people will vote in accordance with their race. Simply put, if one gets AA they will probably support it, and if one does not get it they will most likely be against it There are very few people who dont solely think about themselves when approaching these things

omg i can't stand this site anymore!!! these topics get debated over n over n over.
(then leave, robizzle!) there, i said it before you guys had to 😉
You are way off. People who support AA aren't necessarily URMs. And I reckon the vast majority of pro-AAers aren't URMs. I'm anti-AA, btw.

So about "fade to black"...did Jay-z think he was pulling wool over our eyes...everyone knew he could not keep out of the rap game!!!!
And all people on def jam should leave b/c J is never going to allow them to succeed...his ego is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyy to big to allow it. I hope they wake up and smell the haterade in J.
oh wow
I agree with Affirmative Action in a socioeconomic sense. Poor people, who have grown up in poor neighborhoods and have not been afforded the oportunities that everyone else has, should receive the benefits of AA, regardless of race. So, the poor kid, whether he is black or white, should be given a leg-up in the admissions process because he truly deserves. A wealthy black kid who has been given all of the opportunities in the world to excel should not be afforded the benefits of AA just because he is black. In short, AA should only help those, regardless of race, who truly need it.
Then again, I'm all for diversified education. I wouldn't wanna go to school with all middle class white males like myself. I enjoy interacting with all races and because of it, I am a more well-rounded and unique person, so don't construe this tirade as racist.

Only 20% of the people voted for affrimative action??
THAT IS EXACTLY WHY WE NEED IT!!!
Everyone here can afford a computer, everyone here can afford college or at least be able to apply for loans.
But the same oppurtunity can't be afforded to others? The people you are competing against, had fathers and mothers who were openly discriminated against!! Who were passed up for promotion ect. Let alone not given the oppurtunity for education.
This is crazy!!
Its a flawed system - we need a new one.
There are plenty of white people who cannot afford a computer or college. They don't get any preferential treatment.
Diversity is important, but the quota system is ridiculous.

why dont they make a subforum dedicated solely to politics/religion/etc. where all threads like this can go into?
I thougt that's what the everyone forum in the doctor's lounge is for.
As LizzyM will remind us periodically, affirmative action is also why there are actually women in med school. This is why it always brings a wry smile to my face when I find my female counterparts decrying affirmative action for (insert reason here). If not for "the system", every form of higher education (including college) would be almost completely populated by white males. Women didn't just magically start entering college (and med school) in record numbers over the past few decades. The largest population to benefit from AA since its conception have been...wait for it...single white females.![]()

This is something that will effect every person in premed in some way. There is not one person that has not been lead to think about their own race due to affirmative action.
There are good arguments for and against it but it is an important issue.
