ok...there is so many what are "my" chances... i'll sum it up.

GPA DAT
1.0-2.0 1-30 = Don't even think about it.
2.0-2.5 1-19 = Post bacc/Masters & Retake DAT
2.0-2.5 20+ = Post bacc/Masters
2.6-3.0 1-19 = Post bacc/Masters & May retake DAT
2.6-3.0 20+ = Ask Armorshell where to apply
3.1-3.3 1-17 = Retake DAT & Apply
3.1-3.3 18+ = Apply (not on the safe side yet)
3.4-3.7 17-19 = Apply many schools (you'll probably get in)
3.4-3.7 20+ = You'll probably be the one holding multiple spots
3.8-4.0 1-16 = This doesn't happen that often
3.8-4.0 17-20 = 👍
3.8-4.0 21+ = Are you kidding?

These are just my opinions since alot of people come here for sdners opinion on their stats. If you guys have any more inputs to this to help out others who are applying for this cycle, it would be great

Armorshell, where should I apply with my 3.27 cumulative gpa?

Funny! Where are you applying to?? First time applying or no?

You need to have rockin DAT to go with that gpa if you want to ask where to apply to armorshell!! 😛

The unfortunate answer is, everywhere. Apply to as many schools as you can afford, and go on as many interviews as you can afford. There's no guarentees anymore.

Seriously... this is not the time to be cheap. Apply as many schools as you can to bring your chances up.

So far I have 17 on my list....out of those i think only 3 are public ...rest of them are private. There is a higher chance of getting accepted in private than public.

After summer term my GPA will be around 3.44 if i get A in all three classes which i think i should be able to....so can't wait for the summer to be over.

sorry i forgot to answer your question... yes this is the first time I am applying. Have you taken DAT yet? I had second thoughts about applying but then i was like wth let me just apply! you never know i might get lucky plus i didnt wanted to waste a whole year. So thought that i will just take my chances.

Hi armor, 17 schools enough? most of them private

go on as many interviews as you can afford. There's no guarentees anymore.

Go to every interview offered before December 1st. After 12/1 you have hopefully gained a acceptance letter, and once this happens pick and choose what interviews to go on.
There will always be some school you will go to if it is the only one you get into, but wont consider if you get into a higher choice.
Yet again you may fall in love after visiting... Until you have an acceptance go to every interview you are offered.

Hopefully I will get asked to interviews, because I will definitely go to all of them.

I haven't taken the DAT yet, and I am applying to 17 schools as well. However, about half are public and half are private. I live on the east coast and didn't applying to any schools on the west coast.

However, I might add them on later..I'm really not sure. 😕

I think it is waste of money to apply to out of state public school. They hardly accept at most 10 out of state students. And with stats like mine, i don't stand a chance. That is my opinion.

hmmm your statistics does it include out of country students (Canada) and extracurriculars/job shadow/ etc... ?

Just curious

2.6-3.0 1-19 = Post bacc/Masters & May retake DAT

Post bacc/Masters - 3.8gpa!!!😍 😍

DAT (practice) 17/21/18

I think I have a good shot!!

3.1-3.3 18+ = Apply (not on the safe side yet)
3.4-3.7 17-19 = Apply many schools (you'll probably get in)
3.4-3.7 20+ = You'll probably be the one holding multiple spots

I'm between those three. I want at least one acceptance. Anywhere.

Not necessarily. IU allocates about 1/3 of its class to out-of-state applicants every year. I personally think that's a few too many given the number of in-state applicants, but it give you a better shot than most public schools.

I haven't taken the DAT yet... But so far, I have an overall 3.9 gpa (4.0 science). I just hope I can keep it that way and score good on the DAT.

Even with this you shouldn't put all of your eggs in one basket. I was in this category and was rejected from a few schools that I mentally withdrew from after getting into UCLA but never officially withdrew from. Those include USC 😱 (I almost pissed myself laughing when I opened the rejection letter), UoP & HSDM. I didn't go to a few interviews that I may have gotten into...

My point is APPLY TO A LOT OF SCHOOLS REGARDLESS OF YOUR SCORES.

You were rejected from USC? You've got to be kidding me.

True, but you still got into one of the greatest dental school in the nation.
Dude if you have 3.8+ gpa and 21+ dat.... you really shouldn't be asking for your chances of just getting in unless you're applying to very few schools or public schools out of state.

By the way i think i'll get that rejection letter from USC as well. 😛

Not to be rude, but I checked your predents.com page and noticed you worked full time for the same company for 9 years. FUll time = 40 hours a week. Your tellin me that you were able to get a 4.0 with that. What I don't understand is how you can even go to school and work an 8 hour shift?

this stats seems too good to be true. (not that these people dont exist, but i dont believe they will settle for a school like UCLA)

do programs such as SMDEP give you a better shot at getting in to dental schools?

I just wanted to add that I was offered an interview at West Virginia as an out-of-state student. My GPA was the strongest part of my application, but my DAT was just average... 18AA/18TS/15PAT... 14 on QR... so anything is possible. If you apply to state schools, choose wisely.

No offense taken. It's called working weekends, cramming classes into two or three days a week (yes that means class ALL DAY), working 10-12 hour days when not in school, having a very understanding boss, and having a near-photographic memory. Add it up, 16 on the weekend and 24 during the week = 40 hours. Granted sometimes it was more and sometimes it was less, but it was always between 35-45 per week. Btw, not only did I get A's, but out of the 15 clases I took at UCSD to finish my bachelor's I got six A+'s.

Oh and now I probably work 50-60 a week for the same company.

good point...

Actually UCLA was my first choice and it's one of the top schools in the nation. My family lives here, I surf, it's cheap, I got a kick ass (if you can call it that) scholarship and guaranteed housing, I only have to move 60 miles, I am almost guaranteed to specialize. Honestly, what more do I need?

LOL now this will turn on some triggers 😱

You were right! :meanie:

Lifeisgood is a legit guy. I'm sure he made it work somehow.

Settle for a school like UCLA? Are you kidding? Look at the stats of UCLA's entering class! Just like lifeisgood said, its one of the best schools in the nation and a top choice for a ton of applicants. It was definately my top choice and I have no regrets turning down other schools that even offered me a scholarship. I'm sure a lot of our entering class turned down some other good schools to go to UCLA.

How can you argue that UCLA doesn't have some of the highest stats for an entering class out there?

Totall agree with you!!! I am a cheapskate as a rule, but when it comes to this, I will do what it takes to have a fair shot at D school, even if it means being broke.

The man speaks the truth 😉

ok ok guys... yes, ucla is a good school.
i am partially envious of lifeisgood's stats, plus i have been conditioned to ucla being the normal school... personal ucsd looks more appealing..

guys.. just an opinion.. plus i am not bashing ucla either... gosh...

You're right. UCSD's dental school is more appealing

UCSD was awesome and, as I've said before, if they had a dental school I would be there.

best post in the predental forum in a long time. including the ones I posted, that says a lot!😀

hi, i need some advice.

i have been reading what everyone's opinions are for certain gpa/dat ranges, but i guess it'd be helpful if i could get ideas for my specific situation.

gpa: 3.34/4.0
s.gpa: 3.30/4.0
dat: aa 21/ts 19/pat 20

i am wait listed for temple so i am reapplying. everywhere i've called is telling me that i applied just way too late (october, i was foolish). so this year, i am sending out my app next week. i haven't really improved much since last year. i just have an extra year's worth of upper level bio classes, and i am doing a little more shadowing. is applying early enough to better my chances?

thanks for your help! :]

you don't understand what I am trying to say. Yes it is possible to get in out of state public school, but the chances are VERY LITTLE. so why waste money & take the risk? plus like you said your gpa was solid & i mentioned in my post that stats like mine, don't stand a chance! (which obviously means i am an avg student). Plus this was my opinion, I am not saying not to apply out of state public schools at all. I am applying to 3 out of state public schools myself, but all i am trying to say is that keep the number as minimum as possible. I would rather put that money into private school than out of state public school where we have a very little chance.

Hey your numbers are fine and you're applying early this time. I'm sure you'll get some love calls.

Hi i know this is off topic but does topscore pro provide you with explanations of the answers? or let you go back on the same test & let you look at the questions? i just took topscore's practice test for bio & all it shows is my report & right/wrong answers (A,B,C,D) ...but it doesnt show me questions & answers. How can i look at my mistakes?

thanks!
