Iowa Resident Waiting List

I hate to tell you this but until the aid packages come out and the second look weekend comes and goes i would imagine a number of the in-states holding acceptances including myself won't be withdrawing. I'd love to help it move right now...but I've got to make sure things are squared away at Mayo before I feel comfortable withdrawing. i wouldn't worry about it moving after May 15th I honestly think you will see it move a good 30 or so slots.
DocMD85 Same story here. I wish people would just withdraw already, but understand that it may not happen until that May 15 deadline approaches.
Allegedly, that is when the list will move. I don't know about you, but I'm in the mid 20's (in-state) on the waitlist, and hearing that in years past 20-some to 30-some get in off that list, I'm still right on the bubble.
So I guess I'll tell you what I tell myself: It's a compliment to our (potential) future school that people hold out only for a really good offer (Mayo, OOS with full-ride, etc) rather than decline outright. Keep on keepin' on and hopefully you won't spend too much holding seats at other schools before UIowa seats open up.
Good Luck!!!

You are absolutely right...it has taken one heck of an offer to make me decide to not enroll at the University of Iowa. I honestly believe the only reason the in-state waitlist moves at all is Iowa's inability to provide decent merit aid to residents...this works in your favor and why you may even see waitlist movement this week as the first round of aid packages are released and people begin to realize that they can go to places like Northwestern, WashU and Mayo for less money. Iowa produces lots of very qualified applicants, just look at our collective applicant GPA and MCAT scores on the AAMC site and you guys should really feel great about being in the top 30 of the waitlist and also have some confidence that you'll have a seat next year at Iowa. Personally the decision between Iowa and Mayo has been a tough one, as I really think overall they are about equal when all is set and done (sans financial support). hang in there, if it all works out you will get the chance to get a superb education, I don't know about the others who are holding on to acceptances but I definitely don't see Iowa as my back-up it was one of my top choices when I started...I wish you both the best of luck, I hope there is movement well before May 15th.
I guess you guys are right. I am actually quite high on the waitlist (in the upper teens) so I really dont have that much of a right complaining. Its just that I wish I knew so I could get an apartment, and possibly apply for the summer research. *sigh* oh well...hopefully this week will be better. Thank you both for the encouragement and well wishes.

Yes!!!
DocMD85 said:SO like...now the word is that there is gonna be very lil movement :-(....*sigh* what feeling did you guys get after get acquainted weekend...
DocMD85, where did you hear that there will be very little movement? Is it just from the movement (or lack thereof) thus far on the IS list, or have you talked to someone about it?

I hate to tell you guys this but I really got the feeling at "get acquainted day" that most of the folks weren't there to get make a decision. There were a few people I ran into waiting on schools like Columbia etc. but most were out of states, the in-states seemed to be headed to Iowa for sure. I think this might be because people actually dropped before march 15th and they were able to fill those spots without using the waitlist. So if you had to ask me my opinion I think I'd tell you that most people headed to Iowa have made up their minds.
On a positive note I'm dropping my acceptance this week. Hopefully that helps one of you out.

Well, just the lack of movement...and someone mentioned it too..I dunno.. All I know is that I am not feeling very comfortable with the fact that we have only moved up 2 spots...

DocMD85 said:hey snobored18...approx how many instaters do u think there were...haha I know its prob hard to tell...but do you remember how many people showed up?
Turn out was good...I'd say there was easily 100+ pre-M1's in attendance.
I will concurr snobored's statments. Any indecisions I saw was with those from out of state. They were mostly trying to get a better feel for Iowa City. I thought the numbers were closer to 80-90, but I could be totally off.
Best of luck to you all! Hopefully I will see some of you in the fall.

Hi! I just started FREAKING out because I'm pretty sure I would have been accepted to my top choice school by now, so Iowa is becoming more and more important. I'm number 12 on the non-resident waitlist now (I started at 14). Everyone I talk to keeps telling me I'll probably get accepted (I keep hearing ~30 as the number they take).
I was hunting around some posts from previous years, and it seemed like the list moved a lot around June and even July--sometimes people hold onto multiple acceptances, and maybe the schools start making them pick then? Anyway, I was worried but am still holding out hope. The thought of doing this med school application thing again makes me want to take a very long nap!
Nice to know people are in the same boat as me--good luck to everyone. Who knows, maybe we'll even become friends next year at Iowa!

Just for reassurance...guy from my undergrad got in a week before school started last year, I think he was #28 or so on the instate list.
