psiyung said:I am currently in dental school. Regardless of how many exams I have the following week (even 5-6), I still don't study on Fridays. Fridays are reserved for me, and me only. 👍
How late do you stay out on friday nights for example, and can you function the next day to study if your out till late?
psiyung said:I hear many students dont even have one night to themselves when in dental school, What do you guys think?
I am only typing with one hand because there is a beer in the other 😀
I'm going out for some sweet happy hour specials in about 2 hours 😀
In all honesty, it depends how you want to do. I study 2 maybe 3 nights a week and thats a heavy week. I do nothing on the weekends, unless there is a major exam or unless I go to school to prep teeth.
Sure I do not have a 4.0 but I am slightly better than a 3.0

Do I function the next day? Yeah, but only because I wake up at 3-4 ish 😀
Dental school? Social life? Not if they are SDN members. 🙂
Social life? Of course we do, way soo much. I think
I don't study Friday night. I do read in the weekend. But I do go shopping, etc...whenever I want to...
And my friends, they do go out a lot...And still do well in school. They are amazing young people.

I highly doubt that, its all about managing your time. Maybe when you first get to dental school it well be a little overwhelming, but once we get into the swing of things, it should be fine. When my aunt went to dental school, she always talked about dental school being the time of her life(She didnt go to school that long ago), she had the best social life when she was in dental school.Ash said:I hear many students dont even have one night to themselves when in dental school, What do you guys think?

Your aunt was a Geek in undergrad, wasn't she? 😀 definetely the first time I heard that!
It's time management and more importantly knowing what u want to do post-grad.
Ha! Well, she did go to undergrad and lived at home. SHe went away when she went to dental school.lnn2 said:Your aunt was a Geek in undergrad, wasn't she? 😀 definetely the first time I heard that!

Ha, are you kidding???
I know here at Columbia we party every weekend, some even go out throughout the week.
Exceptions are of course weekends before exam blocks.
Seriously you will go insane if you dont go out and enjoy life.
Its def all about time management and quality vs quantity of work.

ok, at IUSD, i felt like i was on a 2 different schedule every other week.
one week: you are constatntly studying and getting ready for your biweekly exam (mostly 3-4 classes).
the week after that: you think you are studying but you are really partying and celebrating the survival.lol
i felt like i was always trying to be cought up but never did. so, at the end you just dont care and you do the best you could. maybe because i was new to dental school. i will see if i can manage my time better the next semester.
p.s: we got in trouble for having gone to a bar at 10 am after a biweekly. lol sometimes 10 am is all you have and thats when you party. LOL

Ah, Ahmad, you're bringing back fond memories of last year. Don't worry, next semester is lots better than fall was.
In terms of going out, i think it is highly dependent on your personality and priorities. There are some people here that can go out 2-3 times a week and never really come to class... other people I haven't seen out since Orientation. It's a pretty wide spectrum of people, but there will be some weeks/weekends that you can't go out, and other weeks that you're out all the time. Take one week at a time, one exam at a time and things should work out... (or so i hope 🙂 )
Basically reiterating what everyone else has just said. I actually just came back from a club/lounge right now. A lot of ppl from my class were there. We don't have any finals tomorrow, so we had to go PARTY !!!.
Anyway, it depends on what you like to do and as long as you keep the social stuff in moderation / save for special occasions, you'll be fine. That is, assuming you are putting adequate study time. All work and no play makes dental students very frustrated indeed

Up until this reading this thread I was under impression that being a d-student one has no personal life at least for the first two years. I had lost of fun during my undergrad and I should have said more "fun" than I could handle and now surprised I graduated and even go accepted to d-school 😱
So, my question is for those people that want to specialize... Do you have personal life at all? Or it's just a privilege of GPs wanabes...

It depends on how good at memorizing ridiculous amounts of trivial details you are. If you are just naturally very intelligent, then you can go out as much as you like. If not, get ready to spend a lot of time at the library.

Is it true that there are some people in Dental shool that do party every now n then and ultimately they end up failing out of dental school???
I hear this is the case with NYU dental school and happens frequently...
Let me know what you think...

man, that makes columbia sound easy IF a person gets his stuff done. but, what about the ppl at the top 10% of the class. or the *******es who give their hear&soul but just can quite get there. how much do they study?
also, what's the typical gpa to be in the top 10% at cu?
thanks
I think any sort of partying is good as long as it is after a good sit-down disciplined studying.
I bet at Loma Linda, they don't party as much.
To me, I like to just hang out with people. Bunch of guys drinking beer at some bar is not my kind of fun. it's cool to sit down with some friends, sip some non-alcoholic drink, and just shoot the wind about anything that comes across and take me away from school work. That's how I hope my dental school experience will be.
Or how about working late in the lab at night, and then go take a nice break with a fellow student of the opposite sex? That would be really relaxing. Then again I'm not in dental school. Ha. My fantasies.

I'm a GP wannabe, but after my first semester, while still going out and having a good time, I'm still in the top 5%, but I've had the hardest courses before, so next semester will probably be a little different.
It's all about the person I say, in our class some partied it up and failed out completely, others did it in moderation and got their C they wanted. Some didn't go out at all and only got B's.

Yes this is the case. there is a threshold for everything. I can hold my hand over a candle for 15 sec, but more than that and my hand cooks
Its like that here. You can party, but there is a limit and you just have to know what it is. Unfortunatly, I know 2 people that got booted bec of partying too much.
So enjoy yourself...just not to much

Tootheses said:Do dental students get involved in serious relationships?
Highly unlikely! Dental students are trained to never to fall in love... oh, no, wait, I must be getting confused with the ways of the Jedi padawan!!!
Only the lucky ones my friend. Keep dreamin'.

There are also people who study like b*****s and end up failing.
I don't study and I don't party. I do just fine.
jk5177 said:There are also people who study like b*****s and end up failing.
I don't know how they get in the first place.
It all depends what you want out of Dental school. If you want to be a GP and just pass, then I am sure you can afford to go out all the time. Some people study 24/7 and are not balanced. Some people can go out a lot and get 4.0, which is great. The bottom line is I think compared to undergrad: expect to go out less often, especially if doing well is important to you. D-school involves many sacrifices and partying is sometimes one of them. Just my opinion.
Also, as far as dating and "falling in love" dental students are normal people. There are many people in my class who are in relationships or even married. As well, there are people that were in relationships and broke up during dental school. I think it is possible to date in D-school, you just have to be committed to both school and the relationship.

You may not know, but the admissions committee sure does.
Ash said:This seems to be a pretty hot topic,,,does anyone know if the dental students at UMDNJ have it as easy as some other schools, or does that school
bring about less of a social life once you're in??
UMDNJ does have a good social life...most ppl live within a 30 min drive from hoboken and NYC which is always a good escape from newark

I am going to be specializing and I have had a blast partying while in dental school...the secret is time management!

Would you mind sharing your secret?
People are different and everybody has his/her own approach. I don't really think I had any time management while being undergrad... studding a night before finals is not an indication of time management at all, but that was my study approach in college. I'm confident my little "secret" won't work in d-school anymore 😳 so I have to come up with a "real" time management strategy...

I agree , eventhough everyone has a diff tactic for time management,,it still can be useful to have a little blueprint or strategy to follow in managing time the best possible way...Anyone has any tips on that..
There is no solid blueprint in dental school. Just fail few of your first exams, you would definitely find your own way for time management.
