Destress with baking/cooking!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Neat site! Even though I just had two fully loaded, homemade tacos, I'd like one of everything in the pictures! Scrumptious.

Hello baking buddy! I too love to cook, and this blog has some WONDERFUL ideas, including: petri dish cookies, cookies shaped like alive (and dead) lab mice, cookies in the shape of the periodic table, lab-coat wearing gingerbread men, and atom cookies. Google 'royal icing' for how to make great home-made icing and color the icing with food dyes to make delish treats. HURRAH FOR COOKING!

am making a hearty miso noodle soup right now and avoiding worrying about my impending interview....

lol! Thanks for the link, lalzi22! (and wolfspeaker) I know what I'm doing this weekend (and it definitely involves nerdy science cookies!) Hopefully my friends find them as amusing as I did. 🙂

And good luck on your interview Pigsfoot!!! :luck:

I've been hooked on that blog since the first time you posted it, Lalzi! I'm planning on making some of those caramels to give to a friend who let me crash at her place for an interview! They look so good!

Glad to spread the nerdy love. I shall be baking these for my classmates next year at (most likely, 99% chance) Ohio. So if you are on the fence about Ohio...there will be nerd cookies!

I don't think I'll be going to Ohio...mostly because I didn't apply there 😉 but if you wanna post pictures so I can at least drool at them...

Baking is my favorite thing EVER. My Christmas present: an ancient, glorious Kenmore stand mixer that belonged to my grandmother.

My boss requested that I return from vet school every year to bake her birthday cake after this year, when I made a two-layer chocolate cake with peanut butter icing and crushed Reeses between layers. And drizzled chocolate alllll over the top. mmmm

Great website with some delicious recipes and mouth watering photos! I wish this person lived with me!

Sweet! Another great baking site for me to follow! Thanks!!! 🙂 Other cooking blogs I'm following are the bakerella blog, pinch my salt blog, and (just for fun and great laughs) cake wrecks blog.

Cute cookies! Thanks for the link! I'm somewhat surprised I never thought about this before. It would be fun to do a Petri plate cookie that looked like an E. coli streak on an EMB plate. I LOVE that metallic green color, it's gorgeous. 🙂

And for anyone who wants to do the food coloring, don't use the diluted watery crap they sell in the grocery store. This will water down your product and isn't concentrated enough to get you the colors you want. (I decorate cakes on the side and couldn't imagine trying to use those to color fondant.) If there is a store near you selling Wilton icing color, then that's what you should use. I'm not a huge Wilton fan, but they're selection is great and is more ubiquitous than some of the other companies (like Americo). So far, I've found Wilton makes the best piping tips, though (Ateco tips start rusting after a bit, which is disgusting). Don't double dip a toothpick into the coloring after it's touched icing and it will never spoil!

I follow all three of those. (Mmmm bakerella.) Cake Wrecks makes me giggle.

I LOVE Cake Wrecks. It's one of few blogs I've see that regularly makes me LOL. The commentary is so fantastic.

haha I thought this thread was titled "Distress with baking/cooking"

which was more up my alley! I am a terrible baker and cook. No way I could ever make any of those things though I am jealous of those who can!

anyways carry on..
🙂

I had a random thought about filling empty petri dishes with Jell-O and 151 while working in the Microbiology lab the other day. I just chalked it up to having had too much to drink the night before. 😉

A girl in my lab did make these for our department's Christmas party, though:

It's a cell phone pic, but bonus points if you can identify.. 😀

Ahhhhhhh Western Blotting? Looks moderately like the EXTREMELY crappy ones we just did in our parasitology lab.

haha looks like an ethidium bromide stained agarose gel under UV light to me! Probably cloning. Looks like a linearized vector then restriction digest analysis....but thats just the molecular geneticist in me 😛

Mmmm nerd cookies! Yeah I think I picked the right school 😎

I made some for my boss at Christmas, so they have already made the rounds in the teaching hospital. Definitely a crowd pleaser!

Not sure if I used eggs that were too big or what, but my icing came out really runny and goopy. I was able to pass them off as "Klebsiella Cookies," so it worked...but ugh what a mess.

Ha - I totally read this as 'distress with baking/cooking' and was like 'MY PEOPLE!'

...turns out no.

I like to eat things though.

OH.MY.GAWD.

I should have heeded your warning but alas, it's now too late. I clicked on link and now I'm hooked on this site.
Recipe 51544:
"Savory, cheesy, pull-apart bread with sun-dried tomatoes, bacon, green onions and parmesan cheese. It's the greatest thing ever." *drool*

sidenote: just had Deja Vu of replying to your post about the food porn website. Weirdness.

Wow... Everything is so pretty... I'm afraid to click on anything yet since I have a physics test next Monday (and I'm terrible at physics). Thanks for sharing the great site! 🙂

I sometimes just go this site and type in an ingredient that I have and don't know what to do with.. of course sometimes I just end up going out and buying even more ingredients because I found something that looked appealing 😉

So I just clicked on this site and found myself in utopia. I am still aimlessly wandering it around the site choosing what I will be cooking tomorrow night. I can actually hear the chorus of angels above me. Its lovely.

I'm so glad I finally got around to reading this thread. I've found a new hobby! 😍
